Best use of flooring in a Café/Club/Pub/Restaurant

Finalist: Junckers and Pica Floorings

A large expanse of Junckers’ solid hardwood flooring has been installed in the Paul Hamlyn Hall at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The light-filled space is the ideal partner for the dark grey Spicy Pepper Oak floor, adding an elegant backdrop to the smart interior.

 

 

Finalist: Karndean Designflooring and MacGregor Flooring Company

Looking to make an impact on their sophisticated clientele, the team behind Tuxedo – the premium new bar and clubbing destination in Glasgow’s vibrant Merchant City neighbourhood – opted for Karndean’s Knight Tile Carrara marble and Kaleidoscope’s Pennon design in Opus Luna, Urbus and Ombra.

 

 

Finalist: RJM Flooring and Karndean Designflooring

An old warehouse was to be converted into a new kitchen and canteen for the BAE staff. The building was of poor condition and needed extensive works prior to the flooring as well as asbestos removal. The existing floor was not of the best condition and after moisture tests were carried out a DPM was also required.

 

Finalist: Sika Ltd and MJF Specialist Flooring

Sika ComfortFloor supplied the superior surface solution as part of a major overhaul of East Stand of the ‘home of rugby’, Twickenham. The company was allocated two days for a five-day scope of works with an immovable deadline for the rugby.

 

Best use of flooring in a Nursing Home

Finalist: Karndean Designflooring and MG Flooring & Building

What used to be the HQ of the world-renowned Terry’s of York chocolate factory has been redesigned and restored into The Chocolate Works Care village, a remarkable residential and nursing care community. The centrepiece of the expansion, by Springfield Healthcare, is the unique bustling marketplace, featuring Karndean’s Opus Terra alongside some of the original wooden planks.

 

 

Finalist: Invista Antron and Good & Tillotson Architects

Invista Antron carpet fibre, featuring in Hadron carpet tiles from Burmatex, now provide the reception, waiting room and adjoining corridor areas of Bolton Hospice with a welcoming floorcovering that embraces the need for durable and easy-to-look-after surface.

 

 

Finalist: Danfloor and Paynters Contract Flooring

With the installation of Danfloor’s Evolution and Equinox Collection, this luxury care development is a home in every sense of the word, but also offers exceptional residential and dementia care. The development created 85 private ensuite bedrooms as well as a range of stunning communal areas, a café bistro and a hair & beauty salon.

 

 

Best use of flooring in an Office

Finalist: Medifloor and Forbo Flooring Systems

To eliminate the need for lowering the raised-access floor, Medifloor mounted the transition profiles direct to the raised-access panels using templates to create accurate consistent curves at all corners. Lino was installed to the large T-point area and clad vertically around all columns with welded vertical corners 3m in height. Flotex Grass was used for the conference room with Ted Todd timber used to create tiered seating with access hatches.

 

 

Finalist: Aizlewoods Flooring Specialists and Interface, Karndean Designflooring and Tarkett

The fitout required three different flooring types to be supplied and fitted by Aizlewoods to an extremely tight deadline and the fitters pulled it together on time. There were added complications to its requirements which involved them laying the floor on a specific angle and laying hexagonal tiles in the middle of carpet tiles. Given these aspects were the bedrock of our design it was vital Aizlewoods got this right, and it was spot on.

 

 

Finalist: Woodpecker Flooring and OEG Interiors

New Woodpecker Flooring offices and showroom are situated only 500 yards from the distribution centre and previous offices in Caerphilly, South Wales, and come complete with naturally inspired features, a real wood treehouse and even a slide. The once empty shell of a warehouse has been completely transformed owing to a £2m investment and beautiful design from fit-out company, OEG.

 

 

Finalist: Tarkett and Dale Office Interiors

‘It was a great experience collaborating with Tarkett on the space and we are thrilled with the final result,’ said Kirsty Atkin-Stephenson, interior designer and end-user. There were no issues with the installation, other than having to cut around some wooden slats in the breakout area, ‘The Mix’.

 

Finalist: Interface and Bramhall Flooring

Bridge Architects chose to use Interface’s World Woven collection throughout 111 Piccadilly. It’s a range that puts a modern twist on timeless classics such as Scottish tweed, to help create spaces with a sense of heritage. Linear Tweed helps create definition and direction, while various colourways have been used to distinguish each of the individual spaces and create patterns akin to a classic pinstripe suit.

 

Best use of flooring in Transport

Finalist: Altro and Optare

Optare wanted to showcase new ideas for creating passenger appeal for their demonstration vehicles for EuroBus Expo 2018. The vehicles chosen were the Versa and Solo, premium single-decker city buses. The final design used Altro Transflor custom design flooring in a cool blue for the Versa and a sleek silver for the Solo.

 

Finalist: F. Ball and Co. Ltd. and Total Flooring

Hull-based Total Flooring chose marine-certified floor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. to deliver a high-performance refurbishment for several deck areas on a P&O ferry, while the ship was in the dry dock in Gdansk, Poland.

 

Finalist: Polyflor and Powell Interiors

LVT from the Expona Bevel Line Collection was used as part of a new departures area which was recently unveiled at Cardiff Airport. The new project, which was completed in partnership with Cardiff interior design practice Powell, includes a new, spacious extension area which overlooks the airfield.

 

Best use of flooring in a Visitor Attraction

Finalist: Junckers and Stenhouse Flooring

Spanish City pleasure dome, a Grade II listed building which has been completely transformed and restored in 2018. It features an incredibly domed ceiling in a rotunda, with a large open space and a circular balcony plus three restaurant areas elsewhere in the building – all fitted with Junckers’ Black Oak floor.

 

Finalist: Newards and Polyflor

All the flooring works to the 4,200sq m space known as The Flower Bowl were done by Newards, which installed JHS Tretford acoustic cord to the walls – no mean feat, which required the employees to operate off scaffolding at 8m high to install the cord, in a pitch-black cinema room with only task lighting.

 

Finalist: Uzin and Architectural Flooring Specialists

A Uzin system was used to install the ‘herringbone’ wood floor with the new Sainsbury Gallery at the V&A. The Sainsbury Gallery opened as part of the V&A Exhibition Road Quarter. The expansion created a beautiful, unique space for London and a world-class gallery space for the V&A’s internationally acclaimed exhibition programme.

 

Best use of flooring in Education – Further Education

Finalist: Uzin and Superior Finish Contracts
Superior Finish Contracts was appointed to remove the old wood block flooring and install the new LVTs after a burst pipe flooded the reception at Peterborough Regional College. UZIN NC 150 smoothing compound, which has a high compressive strength of 25 N and produces a fantastic finish was ideal  for use in the reception.

Finalist: Amtico and Paynters Contract Flooring

It was found the original layout of Clothworkers’ South Building at the University of Leeds was confusing to people unfamiliar with the building trying to find their way around, so colour-coded floor levels were introduced over the four storeys. The multiple colours and laying patterns of the Signature collection, as well as the fact that the wearlayer is greater than in other products on the market, all led to Amtico being chosen.

 

Finalist: Forbo Flooring Systems and Contraflor

About 600sq m of Forbo’s Flotex Triad planks was installed in the entrance level of the Andersonian Library at Strathclyde University in a combination of the Steel, Green and Green Line colourways to create a bespoke and striking pattern.

 

Finalist: Milliken and Loughton Contracts

A combination of products with Milliken’s Comfort Plus and Comfort Lite cushion backings were used throughout Bush House at King’s College London, delivering several performance benefits. John Robertson Architects said: ‘In specifying the flooring for undertaking at Bush House, we felt that the Milliken team really understood our requirements. Their impressive design capabilities and outstanding product performance were integral to the success of the project.’

 

Best use of flooring in Sports & Leisure

Finalist: Tarkett and APA Contract Flooring

Tarkett provided Donington Park in Derby with the kind of service it’s accustomed to in the motorsport world to enable the floorcovering to be installed within a very tight schedule. The manufacturer’s extensive range of flooring finishes were used imaginatively to echo the motor workshop and race circuit themes.

 

Finalist: MacGregor Flooring and Polyflor

MacGregor Flooring says it was delighted to have completed the flooring works for New Age Fitness’s second gym. The end-user said: ‘The service provided was second-to-none. John and Jim came out and looked at the site before we got started and gave us their thoughts on what they felt would work best in the different areas of the club.’

 

Finalist: DYNAMIK Sport and Tarkett

This was described as a really good installation where DYNAMIK Sport worked closely with the client who was hands-on from specification to install. They also chose DYNAMIK sports wall panels to complement their choice of flooring and improve the acoustics of the sports hall and our DYNAMIK Giant Carpet Tiles to protect their flooring during non-sporting activities.

 

Finalist: Gerflor and Arcadia Flooring

Charity was the driving factor for many flooring contractors who donated products to the Dale Youth Boxing Club after the Grenfell Tower in June 2017. Seda Sadrettin of Arcadia said: ‘If given the opportunity to influence the specification for similar works we’d definitely encourage clients to choose Gerflor because the products are aesthetically pleasing as well as great quality.’

 

Best use of flooring in Education – Primary/Secondary Education

Finalist: Gerflor and Recreational Coatings

Gerflor has in-depth sports knowledge and expertise that it says positions it as the preferred sports flooring supplier to the education sector. It’s for this very reason that Bolton School is said to have specified Gerflor’s world-renowned Taraflex sports flooring for its main sports hall and its Tarasafe Ultra for two of the changing rooms.

 

Finalist: Junckers and Capital Floors

Built with sustainable, high-quality materials, Storey’s Field Centre & Nursery features nearly 400sq m of Junckers 22mm Oak Classic flooring. The floor in the large community hall was fitted over New Era battens and over underfloor heating, derived from the district’s own combined heat and power plant.

 

Finalist: Quantum Flooring and KC Carpet & Flooring

At St Michael’s School in Salisbury, KC Carpet & Flooring took six weeks and six floorlayers to lay Quantum Flooring black carrier/lime tread. A couple of problems were overcome and there was no onsite waste – in fact, the Quantum installation was said to have been completely recyclable.

 

Finalist: Neofloors and Karndean Designflooring

A staffroom refurbishment at Stamford High School to the value of £10k was conducted over the summer holidays in August 2018. Two floorlayers worked over a period of 10 working days. ‘We are pleased to say that once people had seen the finished article, an enormous buzz was created,’ said the end-user. ‘Our representative from Karndean … reported some positive feedback from among his colleagues.’

 

Best use of flooring in a Residential Entity/Social Housing

Finalist: Loughton Contracts and Havwoods, Desso, Cormar and Nora

The flooring in Two Fifty-One, a 41 storey, 270 apartment project in London, was installed between January-December last year and featured eight installers on site every day. Temporary boilers were installed to commission the underfloor heating early, in order for the herringbone floors to be laid over anhydrite screed without any moisture issues.

 

Finalist: Gerflor and MacGregor Flooring

Hannah House is a new, private student housing development in Glasgow City which is a six-storey, purpose-built building that accommodates 458 students in various accommodation options. Gerflor provided its Taralay Impression Comfort in Nest Black, which was specified at the end of the evaluation process by Vastint Hospitality’s inhouse design team.

 

Finalist: V4 Wood Flooring and Rawlings Flooring

V4’s Deco Silver Haze wood floors were installed in all 16 apartments, featuring throughout all the living spaces, hallways and kitchen areas, at Boat Race House in Mortlake, West London. It was completed in summer last year – all apartments in under three months by a team of three floorlayers.

 

Best use of flooring in a Factory

Finalist: Sherwin Williams and Davidsons Industrial Marine Flooring Division

Over six days, Sherwin Williams laid the floors for LFH Engineering at Ellon in Aberdeenshire. The shortened time period, with long periods of application meant there was a minimum disruption and odour for the workforce and a smooth handover of the flooring areas during key stages. The finished application meant a smooth running of LFH’s daily workforce and machinery for production.

 

Finalist: F. Ball and Co. Ltd. and Contract Flooring

Products from F. Ball were used as part of a high-speed rail installation by contractors from Contract Flooring in Cornwall. Following the creation of a strong, resilient base, the company’s Styccobond F46 solvent-free, pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive was used to install vinyl safety flooring over an area of 400 metres squared at the new Great Western Railway train depot in Penzance, creating a durable and safe result in four-months.

 

Finalist: Flowcrete and Integrated Flooring Technologies

Flowcrete UK has worked alongside the international spirits group Edrington and the architectural practice to provide floor finishes for a new, £140m distillery that will be producing the renowned single-malt whisky brand, The Macallan. The building marks a revolution in distillery design, merging The Macallan’s centuries-old traditions with cutting-edge architecture, and 25 floorlayers were used over a period of 13 months.

 

Best use of flooring in Retail

Finalist: Harvey Maria and Featherby Flooring

Harvey Maria’s ultra-realistic wood plank designs have been fitted throughout Gould Barbers, at 18 Tesco stores across the UK. Emboss In Register designs from Harvey Maria’s brand new MSeries and Premium Wood Collections, were chosen to reflect the traditional barbers’ rustic interior design style - providing a real wood look that is practical, durable and sustainable.

 

Finalist: IVC and Axiom Group
Moduleo 55 LVT products from IVC have equipped Bristol’s new Go Outdoors store with an authentic stone-look floor that’s durable and easy to keep looking great. Lee Musgrave, contracts manager, Axiom says: ‘We’ve been involved with Moduleo for the past five years, specifying and installing the LVT products in about 200 stores for many large retailers.’

 

Finalist: Karndean Designflooring and Cardence Interior Design & Build

Looking to create a beautiful store which offers a premium retail experience, the team behind Sandersons Boutique Department Store in Fox Valley, North Sheffield, opted for Karndean Van Gogh Country Oak and Aged Redwood as part of the store’s luxury design

 

Finalist: Arcadia Flooring and Polyflor

The first JD store Arcadia did was a complete refurb of the flooring in Camden, a prominent high street location with heavy footfall. Arcadia needed to be sure the client chose a product that would withstand the traffic and achieve the desired aesthetics. Four installers worked for two weeks, out-of-hours, and 780sq m of Polyflor Expona Commercial vinyl plans were used.

 

Best use of flooring in Healthcare

Finalist: Arcadia Flooring and Polyflor

Arcadia Contracts replaced flooring in 12 consulting rooms, three treatment rooms, two flights of stairs, two corridors and the waiting and reception area at Southfields Surgery. 650sq m of Polyflor Wood FX was used to cap and cove in the surgical rooms. Four installers were used over two weekends to minimise disruption to surgery services.

 

Finalist: Danfloor and M.G Flooring Ltd

Over three months, five fitters installed products from Danfloor’s Equinox Collection at the Chocolate Works Care Village. Springfield Healthcare, which commissioned the work, said: ‘We selected the Equinox Collection owing to its fantastic choice of colours and the noted durability of the product.’

 

Finalist: Newlife Contracts (Flooring) Limited and Tarkett

Over three months, and with installers working three at a time out-of-hours, Newlife completed an installation at Marsden Road Health Centre in South Shields that saved the NHS more than £150,000 on labour and materials by not having to replace the subfloor throughout the building. Products used included Tarkett Safetred Wood Loose-lay.

 

Best use of flooring in a Hotel

Finalist: Shire Flooring Ltd and Forbo Flooring Systems

At the Marriott Hotel in Milton Gate, Oxford, Shire Flooring Ltd used 13 floorlayers over a 12-week project starting in June 2018. Products from Forbo Flooring Systems, Bolon and Taiping Carpet were used and three problems were encountered and overcome including uneven floors and a corridor carpet issue.

 

Finalist: Loughton Contracts and Alarwool Carpets and Brintons

Working on the refurb of a central London hotel built in the 1800s, Kimpton Fitzroy, threw up plenty of challenges. On a project lasting from August 2017 to November 2018, and with an average of five installers onsite each day, the final result is defect-free, health and safety compliant and sympathetic to the original interior.

 

Finalist: Wilton Carpets and Colour Bank

Woven axminster and tufted carpets from Wilton Carpets brought a sense of occasion to the new Orangery of Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa in the first quarter of 2018. One problem overcome was that the carpet’s pattern had to accommodate the walls of the 16th century building, which aren’t straight and true.

 

Finalist: Bona and Timbered Flooring

Over a week period, three fitters and two finishers from Timbered Flooring used Bona products for the installation and finishing of a 20mm engineered, dark-fumed oak parquet floor at London’s new urban hotel, Assembly London.
