RECYCLING can save you money. This was the message of Matthew Charlton of Axion Consulting, speaking at a packed CFA networking meeting in Cambridge recently.
Matthew explained the Recofloor vinyl take-back scheme funded by Altro and Polyflor. He offered guidance on separating vinyl for recycling at source and explained the condition of flooring required. This includes clean smooth vinyl and safety flooring offcuts and roll-ends as well as uplifted smooth vinyl.
Flooring unacceptable for recycling includes cushion flooring and all products incorporating textiles (such as felt, jute or hessian backed) and flooring contaminated with oil, solvents and other dangerous substances, notably asbestos.
Flooring with heavy layers of adhesive or cement on the rear would also not be acceptable. Flooring contractors expressing interest will be sent bulk bags, each with a capacity of 250kg.
Current charges are £5 per bag for aminimumof two bags.

The second speaker at themeeting was Jonathan Ardley of Ardex, who discussed the safe disposal of
packaging of subfloor products. He warned that any unstable products left onsite could only legally be transported by a licensed waste handler.
During a general discussion flooring contractors present warned that certain builders are awarding
flooring firms contracts and then when they are fully committed demanding that they cut their prices by as
much as 15%.
