Survey: Carpets not being properly cared for

ONLY 3% of households have their carpets professionally cleaned, against experts’ advice. Despite significant benefits, only 3% of people admitted they never have their carpets cleaned by professionals, research shows.

United Carpets & Beds conducted a survey asking the public how often they clean their carpets. The results highlighted most British households aren’t caring for their carpets in the proper way. Without this attention, not only can the carpets become permanently stained or crushed, they can harm people’s health.

Paul Pearce from the National Carpet Cleaners Association said: ‘You should have  professionals clean your carpet at least once every 12-18 months. This will ensure it always looks good.
‘A carpet that’s professionally cleaned on a regular basis will last for many years—often beyond its suggested life.’

The survey also revealed more than half the public vacuum their carpet less than once a week.

Paul Pearce said: ‘Most bedrooms will get away with a good weekly vacuum, but the lounge, hall, stairs and landing will need vacuuming at least twice a week.’

Will Hickman, marketing manager at United Carpets & Beds, said: ‘Different carpets will respond to different cleaning applications. Enlisting the help of a professional cleaning company that’s familiar with the fibres and make-up of each type of carpet is a great way to keep your carpet looking as good as new for many years.’
Having a carpet professionally cleaned every year can:

• Prolong its life
• Help prevent or lessen the symptoms of asthma
• Increase your home’s value or make it more desirable to buyers
• Help control or prevent dust mite infestations
• Eradicate most stubborn stains
• Removes all stains (whereas DIY methods may actually leave further stains)
• Restore areas trampled by heavy footfall
• Ensure dirt and bacteria are completely removed
