F Ball adhesives innovations
RECENT advancements in adhesives technology have resulted in the development of a new, high-performance adhesive that has pressure sensitive characteristics as well as being temperature tolerant.
It’s also recently been approved for installing flooring accessories on vertical surfaces, such as skirting, coving and capping.
Stephen Boulton, technical service manager at F Ball & Co, talks about how these developments have bridged a gap in the adhesives market:
‘When installing resilient floorcoverings, such as vinyl tiles or planks, in areas exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations, including conservatories and other heavily glazed areas, flooring contractors should use a temperature tolerant adhesive.
‘Without the use of a temperature tolerant adhesive, such extreme temperature fluctuations can cause floorcoverings to expand and contract over time, eventually leading to ‘tenting’ and gapping.
‘In the past, flooring contractors using temperature tolerant adhesives had to forgo the advantages of pressure sensitive adhesives, which are a popular choice for the installation of vinyl tile and plank.
‘However, recently, technical innovation has enabled F Ball to manufacture an adhesive that not only offers the familiar characteristics of pressure sensitive adhesives, but when fully cured, it develops the extremely high bond strength required to hold floorcoverings in place in areas exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations (as low as -20deg C and up to +60deg C).
‘Its water-resistant formulation also makes it suitable for use in areas subject to wet and humid conditions, including wet rooms and bathrooms.
‘After extensive testing by F Ball, Styccobond F49 has recently been approved for installing flooring accessories typically applied to vertical surfaces, including skirting, capping and coving.
‘For these applications, a smaller, 500g handy pack is now available. It’s also rapid curing, easily applied with a spreader, solvent-free and low hazard, making it suitable for use in sensitive areas.
‘Unlike contact adhesives, which may otherwise be used for installing skirting, capping and coving, this hybrid adhesive only needs to be applied to one surface and allows contractors to reposition vertical flooring accessories in the initial stages of drying. It offers an extended open time of up to four hours, and excellent plasticiser resistance also makes it suitable for use with highly plasticised flooring accessories and trims.’
