Flooring in education - F Ball & Co
A RANGE of products from F Ball & Co was used to create a floor finish as part of renovations to classrooms and storage areas at Cornwall College Camborne Campus. Delays onsite meant the overall building work was running behind schedule before the subfloor could be refurbished. Flooring contractors from Aztek Interiors selected fast-track products from F Ball to refurbish the 2,400sq m area because of the resulting time constraints.
After removing the existing carpet and conducting a moisture measurement test throughout the building, contractors found significant levels of moisture to be present. The existing tiled floor was cleaned to remove traces of contamination, then mechanically prepared to aid adhesion of F Ball's ultimate waterproof surface membrane, Stopgap F77, which was used throughout the building. Relatively effective up to relative humidity (RH) levels as high as 98%, Stopgap F77 is a two-part epoxy resin system that creates an unrivalled barrier against moisture in a one-coat application. With a working time of 30 minutes, Stopgap F77 cures in about three hours, which helped Aztek Interiors contractors keep time onsite minimised.
Stopgap 600 Base, a deep section base compound, was used to raise floor levels in areas where the subfloor had deteriorated to an uneven state. Stopgap 600 is reportedly suitable for use in light to heavy-duty applications and sets in as little as three hours. It’s recently been certified for use in marine flooring installations following testing to ensure the product complies with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards.
F Ball's minimum preparation, maximum performance levelling compound, Stopgap 1200 Pro, was used to smooth floors across the campus. Stopgap 1200 Pro is designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers. With a working time of 20 minutes and a walk-on time of 60 minutes, Stopgap 1200 Pro was ready to receive new floorcoverings in four hours, delivering ‘excellent time-saving benefits’ on the Cornwall College site.
Styccobond F41 carpet tile tackifier was used to adhere PVC-backed carpet tiles to the finished subfloor. ‘Providing a permanently tacky film, Styccobond F41 prevents carpet tiles from moving under normal traffic but enables them to be lifted and replaced easily when required, which will make maintenance of the floor across the campus easier in future,’ says the company.
‘After extensive research and development, the adhesive has recently been reformulated to provide improved coverage capabilities, as well as a faster drying time and increased tack – while still allowing carpet tiles to be lifted easily when required. Contractors will also notice F41 is now significantly easier to apply as a result of reduced viscosity.’
Speaking of the work, John Hudson, managing director at Aztek Interiors, said: ‘Prior to the refurbishment, the subfloor was in the worst state I've ever seen.
‘I needed a waterproof surface membrane I could rely on to tackle extreme moisture, and I needed products that would cure fast, which is why I chose F Ball and will continue to use its products in future.’
