Gerflor and Connor Sports Flooring

PROVING a sports flooring product that’s all things to all people isn’t exactly easy. Being able to deliver a range of sports surfaces in solid wood that delivers on quality, performance, safety and comfort is an onerous task.

However, it’s a challenge well-met by Gerflor, says the company.

In 2015 it announced its acquisition of Connor Sports and its Sport Court brand in a move that subsequently expanded the company’s global market reach.

Back in 2005, Connor Sports joined Sport Court to form Connor Sport Court International (CSCI).

Sport Court has built systems for many elite associations including the NBA, NCAA, FIBA, USTA, FIVB, US Youth Futsal, US Volleyball and Premier Euro League Teams.

Connor Sports is the US market leader in sports surfacing and has built systems for many elite associations including the NBA, NCAA, FIBA, USTA, FIVB, US Youth Futsal, USA Volleyball and Premier Euro League Teams.

The group specialises in wood, synthetic, rubber and modular sports surfaces and says it has the appropriate solution for every type of athletic, park, school, arena or multi-use facility.

The company is the only sports surfacing firm in North America whose manufacturing facilities are independently audited and verified as ‘zero waste’ and fully ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. They’re also the only sports flooring company in the US to have environmental product declarations on their products.

Their athletic surfacing experts have developed more DIN-certified systems than any other sports surfacing manufacturer, delivering a complete line-up of products which are perfect for gymnasiums and athletic facilities of all types in the education, leisure, fitness sectors, as well as military facilities, sporting arenas and dancefloor studios.

Gerflor has introduced four systems from the Connor Sports family providing a host of sports flooring solutions for several markets. Available now are NeoShok, a floating subfloor system recommended for multipurpose activities.

Rezill Sleeper which is also a floating system and suitable for multisport activities, together with Alliance which is an anchored system and suitable for high intensive sports pursuits. Stock levels are held in France.

The fourth product is the QuickLock portable system which is also retained in France and is suitable for temporary use in a multitude of sporting events. In fact, the QuickLock system can be used to install a basketball court in only three hours.

All these systems can be finished in three different grades of 57mm x 20mm North American Hard Maple strip. Connor Sports products are sealed and varnished onsite which is said to produce a host of advantages in evenness and longevity.

Three grades are available on all Connor Sports hardwood systems. First grade which is aesthetically pure wood and is hand selected to create more cosmetic symmetry.

Second and better grade which is the most commonly specified flooring and exhibits natural variations, consistent with hardwood flooring.

The final rating available is third grade which delivers increased tonal variation and has the same structural integrity with increased colour variations. It’s a sports flooring solution that’s built to last more than 50 years.

When the 2016 Rio Olympic Committee sought to buy eight courts for basketball and their wheel chair basketball arenas they specified a total of 75,000sq m of flooring that would need to undergo the rigours of top-flight performance.

They selected Connor Sports floors. So, it’s true to say with Connor Sports flooring that’s where champions begin, learn, train, play.

Installations in the Republic of Ireland and the UK include KUBS basketball club, Dublin-800sq m, Third Space, Canary Wharf-1,000sq m and Prince William of Gloucester Barracks-2000sq m.

The Prince William of Gloucester barracks in Grantham is a large TA training centre and provides phase one training to Army Reserve Recruits. Delivering high levels of fitness training is a key ingredient of military activity and providing suitable fitness and gymnasium areas is a crucial element of their ongoing training.

When the MOD supply chain company Carillion Amey wanted to upgrade the existing gym at the Prince William of Gloucester barracks they turned to a sports flooring specialist.

Reflex Sports would specify some 1,800sq m of Gerflor’s Connor Maple sports flooring to meet the military requirements.

Richard Darby, director, Reflex Sports said: ‘As a sports specialist we were asked to replace the worn-out sprung flooring at the barracks site. It was at the end of its useful life and needed urgent attention.

‘Connor Maple from Gerflor was specified because the client Carillion Amey was looking for a long-lasting, highly durable sports surface.’

Richard Darby also added, ‘The floor was installed over the reflex rubber granulate cradle system, again Connor Maple was specified because of its guaranteed durability and great performance. ‘Connor Maple was fantastic to work with. The machining and kiln drying was spot on with a very good length specification and clean grading. The delivery was on time, presented well and ready for unloading.’

Richard Darby concluded, ‘Gerflor really pulled out all the stops to ensure the project was completed on time and to the client’s satisfaction.

‘We’ve had very positive feedback from all the users of the facility. In fact, moving forwards we’re actively working on other specifications for Connor products.’
