Jasper Sanders + Partners and Forbo
MANCHESTER design studio, Jasper Sanders + Partners has used various Forbo products in a combination of bright colours to create an energetic and enriching environment for the tenants of Bristol’s latest student accommodation development.
New Bridewell offers students contemporary studio-living and a range of facilities, including social spaces and quiet study areas, in the heart of Bristol city centre.
Jasper Sanders, design director said: ‘Student accommodation has become a competitive market as end users are now very discerning about the quality of environments they want to live in.
‘Our client, Fresh Student Living, wanted us to create an inspiring and vibrant place, which would not only attract future tenants but also help them to connect easily with one another once they had moved in.
‘To achieve this, we set about creating a single destination for the communal areas rather than singular rooms. The different activity areas were distinguished yet connected through the flooring design.
‘We opted for Tessera Layout carpet tiles for this area, as the collection was available in a variety of bright, contemporary colours and the modular format meant that we could create a unique design, reflecting the long history of the University’s Department of Computer Science.’
The resulting flooring design comprises an anthracite grey backdrop, with bright colour pops installed in pixelated fashion at certain points to highlight different activity spaces. For example, in the quiet study area, carpet tiles in a bright yellow shade have been installed and within the more social areas, ocean blue was chosen.
Jasper continued: ‘The Tessera Layout carpet tiles were not only ideal for this project because of their aesthetics - the robustness of the product also meant that it would stand the test of time – even when subjected to heavy footfall.’
Acoustics were an important aspect for this project and the designers wanted to ensure students living within the new accommodation wouldn’t be disturbed by noise pollution. ‘We installed Forbo’s Sarlon Acoustic Vinyl range within the studio flats,’ explained Jasper, ‘as the softer surface and acoustic performance should significantly reduce impact sound, and in turn, improve the health and well-being of the tenants.’
Forbo’s Sarlon Acoustic Vinyl range includes over 100 contemporary designs and is available in two levels of impact sound reduction: 15dB and 19dB, to help designers create modern, yet comfortable environments.
Reducing noise pollution to a minimum can help prevent adverse effects on the human body, such as sleeping disorders, stress and headaches.
Jasper concluded: ‘When it comes to student accommodation, you need to create interiors that will excite and energise students. It’s been great working with the team at Forbo as the service is quick and efficient and the products on offer are very stylish and well designed – helping us create the interiors we envisage.’
The New Bridewell project has been awarded the winning prize in the Fly Forbo 2016/17 competition.
