Karndean and Chocolate Works Care Village
KARNDEAN Designflooring is featured as part of the redesign and restoration of what used to be the headquarters of world-renowned Terry’s of York Chocolate Factory into The Chocolate Works Care Village, a residential and nursing care community.
Springfield Healthcare Group opted for Karndean’s Opus Terra for the centrepiece of the expansion – a unique bustling marketplace – alongside some of the original wooden planks from the factory, as well as the nutbrown tones of Knight Tile Mid Brushed Oak for the reminiscent corridor hosting the history of Terry’s.
Sarah Paskett, general manager for Springfield Healthcare Group, said: ‘Karndean Designflooring have an excellent reputation for serviceability and durability and they certainly lived up to our expectations – we love the flooring and it’s so easy to maintain and keep clean.’
The Chocolate Works Care Village chose to bring the outside in by means of a busy marketplace ensconced in a two-story atrium with a glass roof, featuring a café, shops, hairdressers, and its own pub. The warm, earthy tones of Opus Terra were ‘an ideal fit for the design specification’, says Mark Gibbons, managing director of MG Flooring, contractors for the project.
He continues: ‘The product looks great in the vast space and it’s very warm and welcoming which the residents will appreciate. The zoning effect will help the visually impaired and distinguishes one key area from another.
‘The square cut of this product makes it easy for us to handle, which you don’t get with all vinyl products, and gives the room a modern feeling. It’s also great with underfloor heating and has an R10 slip resistance rating which is just what you need when providing for the elderly.’
Leading the way to the grand atrium is a nostalgic corridor fitted with Knight Tile Mid Brushed Oak, chosen because ‘it had all the characteristics of the original floor, but with durability of vinyl,’ explains Mark.
As well as having a realistic traditional grain pattern and brushed texture, the flooring will be able to withstand the most demanding environments, including heavy footfall, wheelchairs, and the constant moving of equipment.
Matthew Speck, commercial sales director of Karndean Designflooring, said: ‘The Chocolate Works Care Village is a prime example of a high-quality environment for the elderly and we’re proud to have our flooring featured.
‘The marketplace looks remarkable and demonstrates the design possibilities and flexibility LVT offers, and how zoning and sweeping curves can be easily achieved with Karndean, and not just for practical reasons – it’s also striking to look at.
‘Selecting the right floor is one of the most crucial decisions when it comes to a care facility as its important to get the desired look but there is still a huge responsibility to maintain the key properties of safety and practicality. We’re thrilled Springfield Health Group chose Karndean to provide this for their project.’
