Garden room gets a polishing
THE Preparation Group’s contracting division PPC, was appointed by Stirlin Developments to grind and polish the floor of its client’s garden room named ‘The Man Cave’. Internally the focus of the design was on an ultra-contemporary kitchen with a rustic aesthetic, through exposed internal brickwork combined with a custom-made polished concrete worktop that doubles up as a bar and a concrete floor.
As a newbuild, the floor area comprised of 60sq m of new concrete and the brief was to grind down approximately 5mm to expose the aggregate, then to polish it. The Preparation Group used its Terrco 701-S Grinding and Polishing machine fitted with metal diamond shoes to grind the area flat and smooth and to expose the aggregate, followed by resin polishing pads.
The coarser grades of resins were used first, a densifier applied and then further resins, working up to 3,000 grade. Water was employed in the middle stages to enhance shine, while also increasing longevity of the pads, polishing the concrete to a gloss.
A hand grinder was used to blend the edges for a seamless finish. The equipment was connected to an M450 dry/wet vacuum to extract dust during the dry stages, followed by using the vacuum independently to remove the liquid slurry. The M450 is suitable as it’s designed to effectively switch between the two operations without clogging the filter.
The project was completed across two days. Commented Anthony Jones, construction director at Stirlin Developments said: ‘We’re pleased with the finished result, with The Preparation Group providing a professional and stress-free service.’
