Clerkenwell Design Week: Forbo

FORBO Flooring Systems will be showcasing the latest additions to its Marmoleum, Flotex and Tessera collections in what it calls a fresh and imaginative way by, creating a tactile and interactive experience at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW).

Committed to supporting the next generation of architects and designers, Forbo challenged undergraduate students studying two design-oriented fashion courses at the University of Brighton to explore and convey the technical, design and sustainable properties of three of its commercially renowned flooring products. The seven-month project has led to the students’ creative ideas taking centre stage in Forbo’s EC1 showroom during CDW.

Fashion Design students at the university were tasked with developing three ‘imaginative and compelling’ outfit concepts featuring Forbo’s own brand of linoleum, Marmoleum, Flotex flocked flooring and Tessera carpet tiles, as well as the raw materials that go into their manufacturing processes. The rationale behind the task was to explore product possibilities from a different angle, bringing forward unique and unexpected designs from newcomers into the world of fashion and design. Three ideas, one for each of the materials, were chosen for development and over the last few months, all project participants have been working together as a team to bring these concepts to life from design through to garment.

Craig Higgins, course leader of BA(Hons) Fashion with Business Studies, at University of Brighton, said: ‘Forbo have provided our Fashion and Fashion Communication students with an exciting opportunity to work in collaboration with a client on a live brief. Designing and creating 'the Forbo Collection' for CDW festival has allowed our students to use fashion as a dynamic communication tool to highlight the qualities of Forbo floor coverings.’

In addition to the design challenge, Forbo has been working with a cohort of the university’s Fashion Communication students. The second strand of the initiative saw selected students tasked with developing a ‘fully integrated promotional plan’ for the chosen outfit pieces created by the Fashion Design students. Offline, online and showroom communication ideas are also being developed for Forbo’s participation at CDW and its London showroom for the duration of the event.

Mark Wells, course leader of BA(Hons) Fashion Communication with Business Studies, at University of Brighton, commented: ‘Our students have been able to collaborate with Forbo to conceive and produce a whole range of promotional materials and multi-platform activities in a real-world environment where they have learnt to understand the value of their unique skills and knowledge.

‘This mutually beneficial collaboration will be further enhanced by Forbo's support of our students at Graduate Fashion Week, where the Forbo products to be featured on the University of Brighton stand will be seen by a different design sensitive audience.’

Taking place at the EC1 showroom, located on St John Street, Forbo’s participation at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week will reportedly give visitors a fresh and inspiring way of envisioning the key Marmoleum, Flotex and Tessera collections. Forbo says it promises to be a lively, tactile and interactive experience not to be missed!
