Flooring in shopping centres & retail locations - F Ball & Co
F BALL & CO’s Stopgap 1200 Pro is said to be a fast-setting, fast-drying levelling compound for preparing internal subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings, with the added timesaving benefit of being suitable for use over old adhesive residues.
‘When used in these situations, there’s no need to prime before application, saving further time. As such, it’s suitable for preparing subfloors in retail locations and shopping centres, minimising the time areas need to remain off limits to customers during the installation process.
‘The levelling compound is also odourless and solvent-free, a further advantage when working in enclosed spaces open to the public.’
Stopgap 1200 Pro has been used to prepare subfloors as part of the refurbishment of the 480sq m floor at the flagship Hawkshead Family Outdoor Outfitters store in Hawkshead, Cumbria. It was used together with other F Ball products such as Stopgap 400 Repair, a fast-setting and rapid-drying compound designed for repairing internal floors and Styccobond F3.
Contractors from St Ann's Warehouse were sub-contracted to refurbish the floor by B3 Shopfitting. Contractors first removed existing carpets and checked that the concrete subfloor was sufficiently dry for work to go ahead.
Minor cracks and imperfections within the concrete were patch repaired using Stopgap 400 Repair.
Stopgap 400 Repair is suitable for use over a range of subfloor types, including sand/cement screeds, concrete, sound asphalt, terrazzo, ceramic tiles and Stopgap waterproof surface membranes.
Once the patch repairs had dried, F Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound was applied at a minimum thickness of 3mm over the entire subfloor, to create a suitably smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings. Apart from allowing floorcoverings to be installed from as little as four hours, it has a working time of 20 minutes and dries to be walk-on hard after just 60 minutes.
Contractors were required to close off and refurbish each room of the busy outdoor activities store separately, while the store was open to the public. In order to limit the disruption to customers in the shop, F Ball's Styccobond F3 flooring adhesive was used to adhere new carpets to the subfloor.
Styccobond F3 can be used for securing fibre-bonded carpets, hessian, felt, secondary latex and rubber foam backed carpets and cork tiles up to 3.2mm thick. It is compatible with around 70% of the floorcoverings listed in F Ball's Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), which lists adhesives recommendations for over 6,000 floorcoverings endorsed by over 200 leading floorcovering manufacturers.
Styccobond F3 can be used over a wide range of subfloor types, including Stopgap levelling compounds, structurally sound, smooth, dry subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, plywood, flooring grade chipboard and hardboard. However, it may be necessary to skim some non-absorbent subfloor types with a minimum of 3mm of an appropriate Stopgap levelling compound beforehand.
Mark Chapman, managing director at St Ann's Warehouse, said: ‘We were under pressure to complete the floor refurbishment with as little impact on business in the store as possible, which is why we went straight for F Ball products. Stopgap 400 and 1200 Pro both delivered vital time-saving benefits, allowing work to be completed quickly and efficiently.
‘I've used F Ball products for 31 years now and they always offer excellent technical backup.’
