An insider’s tour of the Training Guide
Shaun introduces the 2021 Contract Flooring Industry Training Guide and takes a closer look at what it includes.
FIRST and foremost, happy new year, I’m probably not the only one happy to see the back of 2020! Starting the new year in familiar fashion I’m pleased to inform CFJ readers that included in this month’s copy of CFJ is the CFA 2021 Contract Flooring Industry Training Guide.
This guide provides a full and comprehensive reference point for employers with training needs, covering all areas within the flooring sector. We are more than happy to also send out additional copies for yourself, colleagues or staff if required, please just get in touch using the information at the bottom of this article. The guide is also available online at www.contractflooringjournal.co.uk or as a download at www.cfa.org.uk
As in the previous Training Guide, this year’s content covers core training areas such as Floorlaying Apprenticeships. This includes key information, funding and recruitment help for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and how to access it. You can find information on NVQs for experienced workers and where to access them and there is also the comprehensive list of 1 – 4 day courses offered by the Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) for both the commercial and domestic markets.
FITA, as you may or may not be aware, is backed by the Contract Flooring Association and the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers and training courses range from subfloor preparation to installation of vinyl sheet and tile, linoleum, laminate, solid wood, sanding and finishing and all areas of carpet fitting, including naturals and borders. One-day workshops are also available in Bullnoses, Joins, Stairs and Stretching, as well as bespoke courses tailored to your exact training needs, please visit the FITA website at www.fita.co.uk for more details.
But wait, there is more!

Want to know more about Build UK’s Training Standard – This standard was designed in consultation with the Construction Leadership Council. The Training Standard content explains the training, qualification and CSCS Card requirements (including partner schemes) for working on construction sites operated by Build UK members.
Want to organise some health and safety training?
To actively support floorlaying companies in complying with the Build UK Training Standard, we have listed CITB training courses which will meet managers’ and supervisors’ needs and may attract attendance grants if you are in-scope to CITB.

This competition promotes the importance of apprenticeships and is sponsored by leading manufacturers, distributors, suppliers, CFJ and CFA. All are committed to supporting training and development of a highly skilled and competent workforce. Read all about last year’s winner and find out how to enter your own apprentices.
Looking to invest or support training in the industry?
Find out the vast range of benefits your business could receive by becoming one of FITA’s sponsors. Sponsors play a huge part in the training delivered at FITA and it shows just how much manufacturers want to see training delivered the right way. There are also great chances for exposure of brands through the sponsorship.
