Covid-19: Designer Contracts prepares for stayed return to work

Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring contractor, is preparing for a staged return to work.
The company is bringing some staff out of furlough, resuming vital fitting services, pushing ahead with plans to move into a new and much bigger head office facility and opening a third unit in Scotland.
Said managing director Peter Kelsey: “As a major supplier to the gradually re-emerging construction sector, our £2 million stockholding is becoming a key source of supply to the whole industry.
“As with most businesses, when the lockdown was announced in March, we prioritised the safety of staff by furloughing a large proportion of them while maintaining a degree of activity through key head office personnel along with skeleton teams at each of our 15 regional offices.
“This ensured vital supplies were still able to get through to our existing customers, along with orders from new customers struggling to get product elsewhere.”
The company is working with national and regional house builders as they reopen sites around the country, accelerating its activities and replenishing stocks at its central distribution warehouse to meet the slow but steady resumption in demand.
Following risk assessments, fitters will install flooring in unoccupied properties, where it is safe to do so, complying with SOP V3 and ensuring every member of the team and every fitter has a copy.
Said Peter: “As the industry prepares to reawaken, we are getting ready to support increased levels in activity - while ensuring safe working practices across all areas of the company.
“And we still have big plans for 2020 – one of those being a head office move to premises four times the size of our current space. We were due to move just before we went into lockdown - and will do so just as soon as we safely can, having now signed the lease for the property. We are also in the process of opening our third Scottish facility at Falkirk.”
Note to Editors: Designer Contracts operates across 15 UK regional facilities. As well as flooring, the company provides curtains and blinds, furniture and lighting, and operates a showhome interior design services division.
The company has recently been recognised as one of the top 200 businesses in Derbyshire and has been highlighted as contributing to the local economy and leading from the front.
