National lockdown: Controversy rages as flooring chains remain open
THE second national lockdown may be upon us with a vengeance, but Carpetright and Tapi are still allegedly doing business across 400 stores.
According to Carpetright, shopping safely is still an option. This will come as no surprise to those who have seen many stores selling 'non-essential' items remaining open during both national lockdowns.
There has been controversy in recent days with countless independent retailers urging government to crack down on major chains such as The Range, Carpetright and Ryman for continuing to trade during lockdown despite largely selling 'non-essential' goods.
According to the Guardian, Andrew Goodacre, the chief executive of Bira, a trade association representing 3,000 independent retailers, said his members were furious large homewares and other non-food businesses were continuing to trade while small businesses were sticking to the rules. 'They are using words like injustice, unfair and un-level playing field,' he said.
'Government needs to make it very clear to these large companies that they cannot open or can only sell what they deem essential, not a whole range of Christmas trees and lights.'
