Saint Flooring: CRUK membership contributes to sustainability goals

SAINT Flooring won Take Back Partner of the Year Award in the Carpet Recycling UK 2020 Awards for Good Practice for success in working with the supply chain to recycle post-installation offcuts from the newbuild housing sector.

David Heafey, finance director, who coordinated the diversion of 250 tonnes of waste carpet from landfill in 2020, was also Highly Commended in the Recycling Champion category.

David implemented waste material recycling throughout the company’s nationwide sites in 2019. He says membership of Carpet Recycling UK is contributing to their sustainability goals and helped to achieve annual savings of up to £170,000 a year on disposal costs by recycling their waste materials, including carpet.

‘Carpet Recycling UK supported us throughout and our membership helped us find partners to recycle the carpet. Without being a member, I don’t think we’d have had this success,’ he says.

Materials being recycled from their four depots are carpet (more than 140 tonnes to date); underlay, polythene, and cardboard.

When Carpet Recycling UK was first put in touch with Saint Flooring through core founder member Cormar Carpets, Saint Flooring as a key customer of Cormar was handling high volumes of clean fitting offcuts. At the time these were being sent to landfill.

Cormar says it’s committed to helping its customers save money by collaborating with Carpet Recycling UK and its network, and to assist Carpet Recycling UK to find quality carpet offcuts for its recycling members.

Saint Flooring found its recycling partner John Cotton through its Carpet Recycling UK membership. ‘They’ve proven very reliable and easy to deal with as a partner in respect of clean carpet waste collections,’ says David.

Saint Flooring installed balers for waste compaction at all depots with a commitment to move towards ISO 14001. Compacting waste would mean more carpet waste could be put onto the wagons and therefore save fuel. They also work closely to ensure there are no contaminants in the carpet waste. Underlay offcuts are being collected on a trial basis with another partner, and hopefully this system will be replicated as the partner develops production capacity.

Saint Flooring is a trusted contractor for the new homebuilding market, and so offering takeback and recycling of waste as part of the contract can only be of benefit to the main contractor customer.
‘It’s important for our clients and potential clients (housebuilders) to know we take our environmental responsibilities seriously and the whole waste project demonstrates that perfectly,’ adds David.
