How Herringbone floors and differing plank sizes offer great design options

Simon Darbyshire considers the secret of Herringbone’s enduring popularity and how different plank widths can be used to create striking effects in flooring design

HERRINGBONE parquet is a classic and elegant choice for flooring designers. Known for its distinctive, intricate pattern and sophisticated appearance, it has managed to retain its charm for centuries. But how has it been able to remain so popular?

Historically, herringbone parquet was common in large French halls and English castles, as it was synonymous with money and status. Nowadays you see it in many different types of spaces. It’s still considered elegant, but it has gained a wider audience thanks to the fact that it’s easier to lay and is considered timeless.

The name herringbone came from the pattern, as it resembles the skeleton of a fish. The unique pattern makes it dynamic and special. The floors can also be laid in different colours and finishes, making them flexible and with many design possibilities.

Traditionally, herringbone parquet has been more difficult to install than planks, as it requires precision and experience. Now however it’s possible to click together a herringbone floor, making the job much easier.

Herringbone parquet can be laid in an angled zigzag pattern. In addition to being classic, it’s also a durable construction. But it’s possible to be even more creative and add double herringbone, triple, checkerboard, brick or other creative designs.

Every herringbone parquet is unique. The pattern gives the floor an individual feel, and with the right maintenance, it can last for generations.

But why is herringbone parquet still popular? The answer lies in the timeless elegance, the ability to suit different interior styles, the flexibility, and the fact it’s now easier to install.

When it comes to consideration of different plank sizes in flooring, this can dramatically impact the aesthetic and functionality of a space. All plank sizes can be used in almost any setting regardless of dimensions.

Larger planks in smaller spaces don’t make the space feel smaller. Rather, they create a sense of calm and harmony. The variation in the planks becomes less pronounced, even in more vibrant gradings. This approach not only enhances the visual appeal of the room but also provides a seamless look.

In open-plan areas, wide planks work well but it can be effective to transition to smaller boards in adjacent rooms for a seamless look. This strategy allows you variation and consistency throughout a building. When transitioning between rooms, it’s beneficial to incorporate a threshold, which softens the difference in width and helps the floors harmonise, creating a cohesive aesthetic.

For older and heritage buildings, straight planks arranged in perfectly even rows can often feel too modern. To remedy this, consider mixing plank sizes. For instance, alternating between two rows of XXL and one row of XL to evoke the charm of an antique floor, especially when paired with a nature grade. You should run the same width across each row, but the effect is stunning and it feels like the flooring has been part of the building since its construction.

Another design tip for installation is to achieve the desired knotty look without overwhelming the space. By selecting a clean and more vibrant grading, you can blend the boards during installation for a balanced appearance.

It’s also essential to sort the planks and create smooth transitions between the colour variations found in each package. Oak is a natural material, and variation is inherent. Embracing this uniqueness is key to achieving a beautiful floor that enhances your home.

Choosing the right plank size can elevate your interior design, providing a harmonious balance that caters to modern and traditional aesthetics. Whether you prefer the tranquillity of wider planks or the vintage charm of mixed sizes, there’s a perfect solution for every space.
