Stoneage carpet tiles specified for London office

BALSAN supplied its Stoneage carpet tile collection for the London office of Octopus and Kraken Energy, reportedly providing a flooring solution intended to meet corporate branding requirements and sustainability criteria.

The project required a solution-dyed carpet tile capable of accurately reflecting the client’s colour palette while supporting durability and environmental performance within a commercial office setting.

Working with the client’s design team, Balsan supplied a selection of Stoneage colourways to align with Octopus and Kraken Energy’s corporate identity. Consistency of colour and long-term appearance retention were central considerations, alongside performance under daily foot traffic.

Stoneage was specified as a solution-dyed product to support colourfastness and resistance to wear in high-use areas.

Sustainability was a key factor in the product selection. Balsan’s Stoneage collection is manufactured using 100% regenerated Econyl yarn, produced from post-consumer and post-industrial waste materials such as abandoned fishing nets and industrial plastics. This approach reduces reliance on virgin raw materials and supports circular economy principles by diverting waste from landfill. The yarn used in the collection is fully recyclable and can be regenerated at the end of the product’s lifecycle.

Balsan also incorporates solution-dyed fibre technology within the Stoneage range. ‘Compared with conventional dyeing methods, this process reduces water and energy consumption during manufacture and limits the use of additional chemical treatments,’ says the company. ‘The result is consistent, long-lasting colour performance alongside a reduced environmental footprint.

‘Indoor environmental quality was also considered. Balsan states that Stoneage carpet tiles are manufactured with low volatile organic compound emissions, contributing to improved indoor air quality in commercial spaces. The tile backing incorporates recycled content and is designed to meet recognised environmental and performance standards.’

Continues Balsan: ‘As Stoneage is a stocked collection, Balsan was able to support efficient production, ordering and delivery. This helped maintain alignment with the office refurbishment programme and reduced logistical complexity. Balsan coordinated with the client’s design and facilities teams to confirm colour selection, specification details and delivery schedules, supporting a straightforward procurement process without the need for bespoke manufacture.

‘Durability formed part of the specification rationale. Balsan designed the Stoneage collection to withstand sustained foot traffic while maintaining appearance over time, reducing the frequency of replacement and associated material use. This longer service life supports both operational efficiency and sustainability objectives.’

End-of-life considerations were addressed through the use of Econyl regeneration technology. Balsan notes Stoneage carpet tiles can be collected and reprocessed into new Econyl yarn, enabling a closed-loop recycling process. The company also works with recycling partners to support take-back schemes, diverting used flooring from landfill where possible. The use of recycled content in both the yarn and backing further reduces the environmental impact associated with disposal.

Concludes Balsan: ‘Overall, the project demonstrates how Balsan’s stocked Stoneage carpet tile collection was applied within an office refurbishment to address requirements around colour accuracy, durability, logistics and sustainability, using established manufacturing and recycling processes.’
