Altro to host a breakfast session for male mental health in construction

CONSTRUCTION is a tough industry, and talking about mental health isn’t always easy. That’s why Altro is hosting a breakfast session with Andy’s Man Club – for good food, honest conversations, and the chance to connect across the trade.

The event is open to everyone in construction – from site teams to office staff – because mental health matters on every job. Join Altro for breakfast, hear from people who get it, and grow your network.

The event will be held on Wednesday 5 November between 10:00am–12:00pm at Box Gallery, National Football Museum, Urbis Building, Cathedral Gardens, Manchester, M4 3BG.

Why mental health matters

  • 36% of NHS referrals for psychological therapies are for men.
  • 46% of men would feel embarrassed or ashamed to tell their employer of a mental health issue.
  • 52% of men would be concerned about taking time off work for ‘mental health’ reasons.
  • 73% of adults that go missing are men
  • 73% of UK construction workers experienced mental illness.
  • 92% of UK construction workers feel uncomfortable talking about their mental health with others.
  • 74% of deaths by suicide in 2023 in England were male.

Suicide remains the leading cause of death in the UK of men under 50 – in the past 10 years, more than 7,000 construction trades workers have taken their own lives.

Two times more construction workers take their own lives every working day and mental health issues faced by those within construction is four times higher than the general population.

These statistics are not an easy read, but these staggering numbers are increasing every year. Most people know of somebody that has faced a mental health challenge in their lives. Whether it was through stress, anxiety, grief, addiction, depression, financial or relationship worries, or something completely different, it affects many men, even though they do not ‘appear’ to be or ‘want’ to share their experiences and struggles.

Do come along, extend the invitation, or bring a mate along – it could be the best bacon roll and coffee you have this year!
