‘A perfect finish over an old floor’

LIFTING old tiles or flooring to lay a new floor can be time-consuming and difficult depending on the adhesive that was originally used, and it isn’t always necessary. Where the previous floor consists of sound ceramic or vinyl tiles, it’s a relatively simple task to ensure they’re all firmly stuck down and not cracked or broken, prime them with Prime+ Grip and use a suitable smoothing compound to cover them and level and smooth the floor, says Kerakoll.

Kerakoll UK recommends Proflow MVS which has been specifically developed to give ‘a superb surface finish with a prolonged working time allowing resilient floorcoverings to be laid directly on top of the surface’.

Says the company: ‘Proflow MVS is a highly flexible double component smoothing compound that has all the attributes of a high-performance smoothing compound, but with the added MVS capability that works to block the passage of moisture from the substrate. Proflow MVS is rapid setting and drying, allowing foot traffic after 90 minutes and floorcoverings to be applied after four hours.

‘Where the existing floor has had to be lifted, adhesive and flooring grade bitumen residues are often left behind, and many smoothing compounds cannot be used over these. Proflow MVS is an exception to this rule, working well over these residues.

It can also be used over asphalt, existing vinyl and ceramic tiles as well as calcium sulphate and sand and cement screeds, and concrete.

‘The biggest advantage of Proflow MVS is owing to its innovative new formula, which makes it an MVS (moisture vapour suppressant), allowing it to replace the use of a dampproof membrane or MVS liquid, and making installation smoother and more rapid by combining a potential three applications into one.

‘Once the floor is smoothed, Eco-3000 HT should be used to install the floor covering. This high temperature universal adhesive is suitable for installing LVT, PVC, vinyl flooring as well as carpet and textiles onto various substrates.

‘It’s ideal for use in conservatories, as well as other buildings with large expanses of glass where a high degree of temperature changes could be expected.’

Continues Kerakoll: ‘Eco-3000 HT has been formulated with a fast tacking-off time. Flooring can be installed after as little as 10 minutes, when the adhesive is semi-tacked off and has reached its ‘anti-slide’ state.’
