WHEN working with Quantum Flooring Accessories, it quickly becomes clear that the business is built around one simple aim: being the first choice for contract flooring accessories for specifiers, distributors, and contractors. Part of Quantum Profile Systems, the company draws on more than 60 years of UK manufacturing expertise.
Headquartered in Oldham, Greater Manchester, Quantum supplies projects across the UK and exports worldwide. Yet despite its reach, the business retains a deliberately customer focused and independent approach. According to Tim Hayes, specification and marketing manager, that clarity is central to Quantum’s success.
‘We’ve got a complete range of stair nosings and flooring accessories, and we’re easy to deal with,’ he says. ‘That sounds simple, but it underpins everything we do.’
That simplicity is by design. Quantum operates around four core principles – LEAN, GREEN, SAFE and CLEAN – which shape how products are designed, manufactured and delivered. LEAN thinking, Tim explains, it’s about eliminating unnecessary processes and responding directly to customer demand rather than producing for stock.
‘It’s continuous improvement,’ he says. ‘We’re always refining what we do. A tightly focused product strategy supports this ethos. Quantum concentrates on stair-nosings, transitions and flooring accessories, products it manufactures in-house.
‘We focus purely on what we make ourselves,’ Tim explains. ‘That keeps our technical knowledge second to none, aligns our sales and technical teams, and means we’re always able to respond to market needs’.
For customers, this results in clarity, consistency and speed. Advice is joined up, response times are fast and expectations are managed realistically.
‘If someone has an issue, we’ll help solve it if we can,’ Tim says. ‘That service mindset is what really differentiates our relationships, quality, support and responsiveness.’
Founded in 1964, Quantum is now proudly owned by its executive directors including Simon Crossley, the company Managing Director. Tim credits the senior leadership team with embedding a strong, consistent culture throughout the business, which is pivotal to its continued success.
‘Everything fits together around our brand and expectations,’ he says. ‘It comes from the top, but everyone buys into it.’
Quantum is a manufacturer-only business, supplying 100% through Contract Flooring Distributors. This ensures consistent availability, technical support and accountability across the market. Product ranges continue to evolve, but always in response to genuine demand rather than short-term trends.
‘We’ve added new profiles and expanded our services because the market asked for it,’ Tim explains. ‘We’re highly responsive to customer needs.’
Whilst market conditions remain challenging, particularly around price sensitivity, Quantum positions service, specification support and added value as its key differentiators. Specification has become a major strength.
‘I originally joined to build marketing activity, but it quickly became clear there was an opportunity with specifiers,’ Tim says. ‘Contractors and distributors knew us well, but architects needed a single, reliable solution – so we developed CPDs and focused on making our products easy to specify.’
That approach has delivered results. Over the past decade, Tim has worked with the vast majority of the UK’s leading architectural practices to some degree. His time chairing the CFA manufacturers’ committee reinforced his belief in the value of strong trade associations. ‘They build relationships, insight and credibility,’ he says.
Sustainability is another area where Quantum believes action matters more than words. Since 2020, the company has followed a structured carbon reduction roadmap, cutting energy use per tonne of PVC processed by more than 25%, reducing process waste to landfill to under 1%, and implementing closed-loop water systems and our rooftop solar panels can supply up to 100% of site energy during the day on sunny days.
Accreditations including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 underpin this commitment, alongside rigorous testing for slip resistance and durability. For contractors and specifiers alike, this provides confidence that products will perform as required and are backed by robust, up-to-date technical data.
Ultimately, however, Tim believes Quantum’s greatest strength lies in its people. Long service across the workforce reflects a stable, engaged team.
‘The culture and the people are what I’m proudest of,’ he says. ‘I’ve been here 14 years and have no intention of leaving. You can’t manufacture that – if people are happy, you’ve got a strong business.’
That culture is reflected in projects such as the restoration of the 201-year-old Grade II listed Buile Hill Hall in Salford. Here, Quantum supplied bespoke curved and straight stair-nosings in a Classic Bronze finish, balancing heritage aesthetics with modern safety requirements and supporting a demanding programme.
For Tim, the message is clear. ‘We focus on what we do best – stair-nosings, transitions and flooring accessories,’ he says. ‘The people behind it are what make it work, and that’s why we continue to succeed year after year.’
