AN opulent home located in the historic Sloane Building in Chelsea, the Chelsea Kitchen is the latest project with wood surface specialists, Havwoods.

Constructed in 1908 and a striking example of Edwardian architecture, this Chelsea landmark was developed into flats in 2016, while retaining some of its original features such as the grand windows and stately brick façade.

Working with architectural interior designers, Golden Mean Design, this apartment underwent a transformative renovation, updating a three-bedroom layout into a luxurious one-bedroom home.

Leading the project, Jess Palmer from Golden Mean Design collaborated with Poggenpohl – specialists in exclusive kitchens made in Germany – to create a sophisticated, contemporary kitchen which complemented the historic character of the building.

Natural materials take centre stage in this space. From the vaulted ceiling with a re-stained timber apex which has been lovingly restored to complement Havwoods’ Lava Chevron flooring, the Verde St Denis marble countertops and Poggenpohl’s smoked ash cabinetry which runs throughout. Warmth and richness define this space, achieving a truly one-of-a-kind kitchen with bespoke features, says the company.

‘The flooring was integral to the grounding of the aesthetic. Golden Mean Design worked with the client and Havwoods to design a custom chevron pattern that allowed fluidity and movement across the space – while juxtaposing with the curved areas of the kitchen such as the island and the dining chairs.

‘The richness of the wood pairs beautifully with the lighter smoked ash cabinetry, with some darker panels dotted throughout.’

Finally, to further elevate the floor, the building team custom-templated embedded brass inlays, adding a distinctive detail that subtly echoes the design’s Art Deco influence, concludes the company.
