While underlay is usually needed for carpets, it isn’t necessary when installing LVT but the process does require suitable subfloor preparation, such as latexing a screed or fitting plywood to a floorboard base. There are some exceptions where underlay could be used by professional installers for acoustic purposes, however, the installer should always check with the flooring manufacturer first as some underlay products won’t be compatible with all types of LVT.
