Gerflor and Pacific Care

WE’RE all staying older for longer, and in much better health it seems. In the UK, most of the long-term care for older people is provided by nursing homes.

The overarching ethos in nursing homes is that they’re places where people with complex health needs live; it’s their home, and quality of life matters as do their surroundings and the very environment they enjoy every day.

About 416,000 people live in nursing homes. This is 4% of the population aged 65 and over, rising to 16% of those aged 85 or more. Ensuring our elderly have a decent level of comfort is close to Gerflor’s heart, says the company.

Gerflor says it’s grown and developed to become an expert in the nursing home field by creating, manufacturing and marketing innovative, decorative, durable, hygienic and environmentally-responsible flooring for a host of healthcare-related solutions.

Providing the UK nursing home sector with a range of products that deliver comfort, safety and durability is perceived to be key by Gerflor in addressing this developing market and needs of the residents and staff alike, the company adds.

Said to be suitable for a vast swathe of nursing home applications, and with 10 new extra wood designs Taralay Impression Comfort from Gerflor is an acoustic multi-layered vinyl floorcovering available in 2m wide sheet, with a group T wear rating.

Taralay Impression Comfort is said to comprise a very high density (VHD) foam backing reinforced with glass fibre and a printed design that’s protected by a transparent wear layer (0.65 mm thick) which offers 19dB sound insulation and an indentation resistance of 0.08mm.

The product is protected by a UV-cured surface treatment Protecsol which is claimed to be easy to clean and maintain, and permanently eliminates the need of an acrylic emulsion (metallisation).

It doesn’t contain heavy metals or CMR 1&2 and is 100% compliant with REACH. The product emission rate of volatile organic compounds is < 70 µg/m3 (TVOC after 28 days – ISO 16000 -6).

It’s also 100% recyclable.

For designers, the range offers 160 references and includes 21 wood effect references, covering the spectrum of wood colours, in 10 stunning designs.

Pacific Care is an established care provider with five care home facilities throughout Glasgow and Renfrewshire. It’s a family-run business where compromise isn’t an option. So, the company says, it was no surprise its products were chosen for a new £4.2m project. They were unstinting in their selection process when specifying the flooring for corridors, day rooms and toilets for its new 60-bed Mosswood Care Home which is in Paisley Road, Glasgow. In fact, Gerflor was chosen for a third time as its key supplier.

John Brawley, director, Pacific Care said: ‘We’ve used Gerflor flooring products before and were absolutely delighted with them.’

John went on to add: ’Our staff are on their feet all day and with the Taralay Impression Comfort they tend not to get sore feet. It’s also excellent for our residents, as it’s very comfortable and easy to walk on.’

John added, ‘The Gerflor products we used are absolutely excellent and I’d have no qualms in specifying them again for another project.’
