What is action for clean air?
Action for Clean Air is Global Action Plan’s mission to fuel the clean air movement by mobilising and enabling people and organisations to act on air pollution and ensure their voice is heard. As part of this mission, they run clean air day, which is the UK’s largest air pollution campaign, bringing together communities, businesses, schools, and the health sector.
The annual celebration, which takes place every June, is part of Global Action Plan’s Action for Clean Air campaign. It’s designed to bring together communities, improve public understanding of air pollution, build awareness of how it can affect our health and what we can do to tackle it.
Why does Action for Clean Air matter?
Every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths across the UK. The World Health Organisation recognises air pollution is the largest environmental health risk. Celebrating National Clean Air Day matters because it:
- Focuses attention on air pollution
- Helps improve public understanding and increases levels of air pollution busting behaviours
- Showcases that a cleaner air future is both possible and desirable
- Demonstrates large-scale support for clean air, giving decision makers a mandate to implement the system changes required
