ROMILLY School in Barry, Wales, underwent a transformative sports hall refurbishment to create a durable, high-performance surface that enhances safety and comfort for younger users while meeting modern standards.
Gerflor supported the project by supplying 458sq m of Taraflex Evolution SL (Sustainable Looselay) Olympic pedigree sports flooring, comprising Taraflex Evolution SL vinyl with an area-elastic undercarriage system. The floor was installed in London Light Blue with a contrasting red border.
The project was delivered by Cardiff-based contractor Trefoil Interiors as part of an upgrade to the Sport Barn at Romilly School for the Vale of Glamorgan Council. The refurbishment presented on-site challenges, particularly with the existing floor levels, which varied by up to 90mm.
Trefoil Interiors’ experience in refurbishment and project delivery, combined with close collaboration with Gerflor, ensured the right flooring solution was selected to overcome these challenges and deliver a successful outcome for the school.
A key driver for the project was completing the refurbishment in a tight timeframe. Taraflex Evolution SL was specified as its looselay installation reportedly allows for fast-track installation while accommodating uneven subfloors. This approach enabled the facility to be upgraded without compromising performance, durability or visual appeal for the school and wider users.
Dan Townsend, commercial director at Trefoil Interiors, explained the Gerflor cradle system was the ideal solution: ‘The Gerflor Sports cradle system allowed us to manage the height discrepancies and create a solid foundation for the new floor. The installation took up most of our time, but the Gerflor Taraflex Sports flooring products were easy to work with, and we faced no issues during the fitting process.
‘It was clear there are very few products on the market that could meet the specific requirements for this education project.’
