Interface unveils next step in delivering a more sustainable solution

WHILE there’s no doubt the news agenda has been dominated by the global pandemic, recent documentaries such as David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet have brought the climate crisis back into sharp focus.

As many companies begin to think about their future operations, there’s still a growing desire for sustainable workplaces. The good news is, you can take a more sustainable approach simply by fitting products which actively elevate a building’s environmental credentials.

Jon Khoo, head of sustainability (EAAA) Interface’s regional sustainability manager, says: ‘At Interface we make this easy for you across our range of products. When you fit our flooring products, you’re providing your customers with carpet tile, LVT and  nora rubber flooring that is carbon neutral across its full product life cycle through the third-party verified Carbon Neutral Floors programme.’

The company’s most recent innovation, CQuestBio, takes this a step further by incorporating carbon negative materials in the backing compound to help lower the embodied carbon footprint of our customers’ commercial spaces, says Jon. He points out that this product has been created through investment in innovation and is guided by materials science.

‘First, we added new bio-based materials, and more recycled content to our backings. Then, we measured how these materials influence the carbon footprint. These new materials, measured on a stand-alone basis, are net carbon negative – greatly reducing the product’s carbon footprint by around a third.’

The first Interface collection available with CQuestBio is the newly launched NY+LON Streets.  Inspired by the world’s most iconic cities, as well as one of the carpet tile’s core materials – nylon, the flooring uses fresh textures and patterns to give customers various design options for their spaces. The backing is also being rolled out as standard on 11 of Interface’s collections, totalling 46 products.

Jon continues: ‘Sustainability and protecting our planet are at the heart of everything we do at Interface. We’ve spent the last 26 years learning and innovating to not only develop a broad range of products which support the sustainability goals of contractors and their customers, but also to ensure our business helps create a climate fit for life.

‘However, we’re taking this one step further and our next goal is to be a carbon negative enterprise by 2040. With a 96% reduction in our greenhouse gas emissions at our carpet tile manufacturing sites (since 1996) and a 74% reduction in the embodied carbon footprint of our carpet tile (since 1996), we’re well on the way to achieving just that and we will be bringing you exciting updates along the way.

‘We also understand that we’re just one part of a much bigger picture and want to bring others along with us; empowering and helping everyone to lower their own carbon footprint. We’re continuing to use carbon as a building block for future products, and we’re working to reduce the carbon footprints of our LVT and rubber products through additional recycled content and other product innovations so you can continue to support your customers with creating more sustainable spaces.’
