ProKnee’s open cell cushion technology cushions kneepads

CHOOSING the right technology for the cushioning of your kneepad is crucial to finding long lasting performance that not only feels good to kneel on, but most importantly preserves your knee health.
ProKnee kneepads use a customised open-cell for their Cushion Inserts. The company says: ‘This super resilient, soft type of foam provides even tension as the weight of your body is applied to the cushion. Open cell technology enables the cushions to not breakdown after the impact of more than eight hour day-after-day use, which means this type of cushion performs like new for years, rather than a few short months.

‘This performance is what we refer to as consistent compression spring-back, which helps absorb shock out of day-to-day wear and tear from kneeling.’

The science behind it is described by ProKnee: open cell foam allows air to flow in and out of the cells when applying pressure (such as kneeling), while the material around the cells allow it to maintain its properties. This allows the foam to be extremely flexible, soft and long-lasting, because it doesn’t decompress. In comparison, closed cell foam (such as EVA) is made up of air-filled cells, but eventually the air will force its way out of the cell, causing the cushion to compress and change its properties, ie harden. (Think of squishing a balloon when it’s freshly inflated. It rebounds, but after some time, the balloon will deflate).

Says the company: ‘Our replaceable custom laminated cushions come in two thickness options (5/8in and 1in) to suit your preferred comfort level. Many of our customers find that over the course of years, they wear in like a great pair of leather boots and opt to keep their old cushions. However, all of ProKnee’s parts are completely replaceable, aside from the frames, so you can upgrade just the parts you need, (like our cushions) or get a Complete Rebuild kit to give your well-worn kneepads a refresh for a fraction of the cost of new.’
