Resource Futures takes on management of multi award-winning Recofloor scheme

THE multi award-winning Recofloor scheme will be managed by Resource Futures after flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor commissioned the B Corp to support the scheme going forwards with its mission to recover and recycle commercial waste vinyl flooring in the UK.

Set up in 2009 as part of a WRAP pilot project, Recofloor is funded by Altro and Polyflor to collect and recycle commercial waste vinyl flooring across the UK. Previously managed by Axion Group and having successfully established roots in the flooring industry, Recofloor has, as of November 2024, joined Resource Futures’ roster of community-focused sustainability programmes.

The scheme’s benefits go above and beyond existing industry recycling and waste reduction efforts, having collected 62,800 rolls of vinyl flooring – the equivalent of 341 football pitches – since being launched in 2009.

Recofloor is a well-respected recycling scheme within the flooring industry whose contribution has been recognised with a number of recent environmental industry awards and nominations.

Earlier in the year, Recofloor won the Circular Economy award at the Better Society Awards and was named Highly Commended in the ‘contribution to achieving net zero’ category for the Awards for Excellence in Recycling. This month Recofloor also picked up a further award, with Recofloor project manager Carla Eslava collecting the prestigious Green Apple award at a reception held at Kensington Palace as the 2024 National Gold winner of the ‘waste management in building and construction’ category.

Recofloor also made the shortlist at the 2024 MRW National Recycling Awards this week in the ‘circular economy initiative’, ‘recycling excellence’ and ‘partnership excellence (commercial)’ categories.

‘Businesses regularly face the same sustainability challenges as their competitors and often the best way to make a difference can be to come together to tackle these issues,’ explains Bethan Jones, director at Resource Futures.

‘That’s what we see with the collaboration between Altro and Polyflor in Recofloor: we’re delighted to welcome this initiative to Resource Futures as another key community programme tackling waste challenges.’

Paul Smallman, director of Polyflor and Matt Robinson, director of Altro, shared their genuine desire to tackle the impact of their products in the environment.

Paul Smallman says: ‘Both partners are committed to continuing the great work of the Recofloor scheme and supporting the industry cost-effective and environmentally-sound decisions in vinyl flooring disposal.’

Matt Robinson adds: ‘Resource Futures has vast experience in running similar projects and of the wider waste and resources industry, so it was a clear choice for us in taking Recofloor forwards.’ 
