Anglo Recycling underlays ‘are reducing its environmental impact’

ANGLO RECYCLING’s big recycling project for 2021 was to reduce changeover times on its recycling line so it could process a wider variety of waste steams economically. This means it can manufacture the fibre inhouse for an underlay for a major DIY retailer in the UK.

Simon K Macaulay, chairman of Anglo Recycling Technology, says:

When we do this kind of work these days we don’t just put the old equipment in the metal skip (as we might have done in the past). We try, as a company, to reuse where possible. And we’re all looking to improve our environmental impact.

So, in this project, Mike our electrician, managed to reuse the old electric panels in our new set up. He also switched the wiring from contactors to inverters. He explained to me an inverter is like a dimmer switch on a lightbulb – instead of running at full tilt all the time, with the help of the inverter the motor only takes the energy is needs.

He reckons energy usage is thus reduced by 35-45% and it gives a payback of 12-18 months on the inverter. So good for business too!

Now I get that this is a lot of detail but we believe at Anglo Recycling that’s how these things work – we want an environment where we’re all always trying to reuse or use less. A

nd through our ingenious colleagues, we’re able to achieve results such as these.

Also, by the way, we can now for the first time recycle economically surplus clothing that the charity shops can’t sell (‘fast fashion’ means there’s too much clothing thrown away). W

e previously brought in the fibre we required for an underlay we manufacture for a leading DIY store, from the south of France. A journey of about 800km by truck. Now we collect surplus clothing from less than 20 miles away and the recycling line allows us to pull the clothing back into the fibre blend we require.
