LOCATED at Queen Mary University London, the iconic Garrod Building has undergone an extensive renovation to further enhance its facilities for medical and dentistry students.
Background
The Royal London Hospital Medical College has been based at the Garrod Building since 1854. The historic building has undergone several alterations over the years to accommodate the rising number of pupils and advances in technology and teaching methods.
Today, the Garrod Building is used by medical and dentistry students and is equipped with a lecture theatre, seminar and classroom facilities plus café and common room. The Garrod Building also houses the Royal London Hospital Museum – home to exhibitions on Jospeh Merrick (the ‘Elephant Man’) and former London Hospital Nurses, Edith Cavell and Eva Luckes.
The challenge
The enormity of the project and the resource required to complete the 3,465sq m installation was one of the biggest challenges for Specialist Flooring Group. At the peak of the project, eight installers were working hard to achieve the beautiful finish necessary for this historic building.
The solution
‘We used UltraFloor products due to the exceptional quality of the materials, which goes hand-in-hand with the support provided by our UltraFloor area sales manager and technical team,’ said Steve Fincham, director at Specialist Flooring Group.
To prepare the substrate for the installation of Amtico, Forbo, TVS, Milliken, Bolon and Polyflor LVT, vinyl, rubber and carpet floorcoverings, Specialist Flooring Group utilised UltraFloor’s latest product innovations, Level IT Multi Pro and Level IT Hydra Bond, to create what’s described as a supersmooth subfloor.
Says the company: ‘Level IT Hydra Bond is a ground-breaking, water-based, floor leveller that can be applied to bitumen and adhesive residues. Formulated for use in highly trafficked areas, Level IT Hydra Bond is guaranteed to have a super smooth finish and is easy to apply.
‘Speed, adhesion, and versatility are just three words to describe the unbelievable performance of Level IT Multi Pro. It boasts an extended working time of 45 minutes, allowing larger areas to be covered at one time. Both Level IT Hydra and Level IT Multi Pro can receive bonded floorcoverings after just four hours and utilise UltraFloor’s unique EnviroBead technology which is made with 20% recycled material to further enhance its exceptional flow and reduce environmental impact.’
Results
Continues the company: ‘Thanks to the expertise of the Specialist Flooring Group team and the performance of UltraFloor’s subfloor preparation materials, this installation took six months to complete and was delivered on time, to incredibly high standards.’
On using UltraFloor, Steve Fincham, director of Specialist Flooring Group, commented: ‘As always, the UltraFloor products performed to a quality standard. All underlayments used achieved a smooth finish which meant no more prep work once installed. They achieved the required strength and allowed good adhesion of the flooring.’
