Mastering line removal: a step-by-step guide for a flawless finish

If you’re using a planer, follow these expert tips to get the job done efficiently and safely, says Lesley Collins.

WHETHER you’re tackling old road markings, warehouse floor lines, or stubborn thermoplastic coatings, removing painted lines requires the right approach, equipment, and technique. If you’re using a planer, follow these expert tips to get the job done efficiently and safely.

Step 1: Choose the right tools for the job
The key to success starts with selecting the correct flail drum for your machine. A TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) flail drum is usually sufficient for paint and thermoplastic removal.

However, if the lines are particularly stubborn, consider a milling flail drum for extra power. Be prepared to make multiple passes to achieve the best results.

Step 2: Gather essential equipment
Before starting, ensure you have everything you need:

  • Planer – Choose between a 110V or petrol-powered model.
  • Flail drums – TCT for general removal, milling for tougher coatings.
  • Industrial vacuum – Keeps dust under control and ensures compliance with HSE standards.
  • Power supply – Use a 5kva 110V transformer and appropriate extension cables.
  • Tape – Secure ducting between the planer and vacuum to help maintain a dust-free operation.

Step 3: Set up for success
Attach your planer to the industrial vacuum for a 98% dust-free process. Always refer to the operator manual before use to familiarise yourself with machine-specific instructions.

    Step 4: Execute with precision
Begin at an appropriate starting point, ensuring a forward, linear movement for an even finish. Patience is key, passing over the lines more than once may be necessary for complete removal.

    Step 5: The final clean-up
Once the markings are removed, vacuum the surface thoroughly to eliminate dust and debris. A clean and well-prepared surface will ensure a smooth and professional finish, ready for repainting or further treatment.

By following these simple yet effective steps, you’ll achieve a professional-grade result, leaving your surface clean and refreshed.
