‘Innovative acoustic flooring’ answers St Pauls’ prayers

DESCRIBED as an innovative engineered wood flooring system with integral Regupol acoustic layer, TIERacoustix, is ‘an aesthetic and functional feature’ of a major office refurbishment scheme in London’s St Pauls district.

Meeting the requirements of the brief for a natural wood look, acoustic performance and void access, around 500sq m of TIERacoustix was laid as the chief flooring element of the refurbished floor, which incorporates workspaces, a café and collaboration zones.

TOTZKE ltd, a London based flooring consultancy, worked with scheme architects Scott Brownrigg to specify TIERacoustix.

Lead consultant Lauren Totzke said, ‘For this St Pauls scheme we were asked for the natural good looks of a timber floor that TIERacoustix provides, but TIERacoustix was also selected based on technical merits.

‘Our client was mindful of keeping noise to a minimum to enhance the working environment. With an inbuilt acoustic layer, TIERacoustix has good acoustic dampening qualities without the installation time associated with traditional wood flooring systems and acoustic products, which require several visits to install.’

TIERacoustix was developed by specialist dry lay flooring company Tier Global and acoustic insulation experts CMS Danskin Acoustics. The patented laminate flooring (GB2531573) consists of a thick UV-oiled oak wearlayer, a Regupol sonus eco 3 (18db) reduction layer and a laminated birch core. The Regupol acoustic layer is manufactured from recycled aircraft tyres.

For this St Pauls project installed by Pica Flooring, the TIERacoustix magnetic product variant was selected. It has Tier Global’s patented magnetic backing for projects where access to floor voids is required.

‘As a magnetic flooring system, TIERacoustix will provide the client with the benefit of access to services in the floor void and the flexibility to lift the flooring and reuse it elsewhere,’ explains Lauren Totzke.

Manufactured in the UK, TIERacoustix is said to be conformity assessed to BS EN 14342 to carry UKCA and CE marking. ‘Both TIERacoustix and TIERacoustix Magnetic have undergone rigorous testing and meet regulations and performance requirements for fire resistance, formaldehyde emissions, anti-slip properties and thermal conductivity. It also carries FSC and PEFC certification.’

Continues CMS Danskin: ‘Without compromising on quality, the incorporation of the Regupol layer provides a major reduction in critical path onsite, because it involves just two components, compared with the traditional four-component (adhesive, rubber, adhesive, flooring) process for installing engineered wood floors.

‘Launched in 2022, TIERacoustix has attracted considerable interest from architects, specifiers and building contractors. Already it has been used in other projects, including the central London offices of Amex and of gaming company Take-Two and in Deutsche Banks’ Dublin offices.’

Available in 12 standard colours or more than 1,000 bespoke colours, TIERacoustix can reportedly be laid on concrete or timber subfloors or to span joists.

Part of SIG, CMS Danskin Acoustics produces and sources insulation products advising on matters
relating to soundproofing materials and noise reduction strategies, including floors, ceilings and walls, to combat airborne and impact noise.

Tier Global specialises in engineered wood flooring, including its magnetic flooring system for raised access floors. Projects include Nasdaq, Pan Macmillan Publishers and BBC White City Soho House.
