Two new reports have recently been published by flooring research specialists Leading Edge. These follow on from similar publications in 2007, 2012 and 2018 detailing the growth and decline of key manufacturers in the adhesives and smoothing compounds sectors over this period, along with other trends.
Leading Edge completed in-depth interviews with 100 flooring contractors about their adhesives and smoothing compounds purchasing behaviour, also covering respondents’ ratings of different brands on various attributes such as price, quality of product, technical expertise, ease of use of product and specification. Each report also provides Leading Edge’s market size analysis and forecasts for the coming years.
The leading four manufacturers, with more than 85% of the market in the GB contract flooring adhesives sector, are F Ball & Co, Uzin and LVT specialists Amtico and Karndean. Although F Ball & Co continues to dominate the adhesives market there’s been a shift in share with Uzin seeing an increase since the 2018 report along with Karndean and Amtico. This sees Mapei, Ardex and Laybond drop down the rankings.
Elly Cousin, research director at Leading Edge, said: ‘We’ve seen an increase in LVT use in the commercial sectors over the past few years, so this change in leading adhesive brands isn’t unexpected. We’ve also taken the opportunity with this report to gain more insight from contractors into the adhesives market in relation to LVT.’
Decision-making behaviour was also analysed with contractors asked to explain their key reasons for selecting specific products and responses were strong around themes of ‘quality’ and ‘reliability’ of product, alongside ‘habit’.
The new report for floor smoothing compounds has identified the leading two manufacturers in the market are F Ball & Co and Ardex, followed by Mapei, Uzin and Tilemaster. The report asked flooring contractors to rate smoothing compound manufacturers on several attributes such as price, quality of product, technical expertise, and specification. The graph shows the responses flooring contractors gave when asked to name the best brand for product quality. F Ball & Co and Ardex came out top with all the other brands rated some way behind. Alongside other attribute ratings, the report includes market share, route to market, specification, and the use of anhydrite products.
