MODERN wood flooring surface treatments come in various types, the most popular being lacquer (normally polyurethane) followed by oil and hardwax finishes. More often than not, what goes underneath is equally important and there are several issues which need to be considered when selecting a suitable combination of products to ensure the result is hardwearing, looks good and is cost-effective.
Do you need a primer? If the floor is sanded to bare wood and a water-based seal will be used for the topcoats – then the answer is yes.
Junckers WB Primer is specially formulated to stop the topcoats of lacquer from bonding the floorboards together. That way the floor can move naturally with the seasons and large gaps can be avoided.
As it is the first coat applied to the bare wood, the choice of primer will often determine the final colour of the floor. Generally, water-based primers such as Junckers WB Primer will bring out lighter colours in the timber.
Says Junckers, ‘Choose WB Primer Clear to enhance the natural tones of the timber or to add a lighter touch, use WB Primer Nordic or WB Primer White. As coloured primers, both are slightly transparent and help to emphasise the natural grain structure of the wood.
‘A fast-drying, water-based primer, WB Primer is recommended for use on untreated or machine sanded wooden floors in commercial, residential or sports areas. Once dried, follow with protective coats with one of Junckers’ water-based floor lacquers.’
For tropical timbers, oily woods and dark coloured patterned floors eg herringbone, best results will be achieved by using Junckers’ solvent-based primer, SB Primer.
