LANGLEY School undertook a major refurbishment of its sports hall to create a modern environment that supports physical education, student wellbeing and sporting participation.
To deliver a durable and high-performance surface, the school partnered with Gerflor to install a Taraflex system suited to the demands of a busy multi-use facility.
The project comprised the installation of more than 680sq m of Gerflor’s Olympic pedigree Taraflex vinyl sports flooring in an ‘Anthracite’ finish, incorporating the Subflex base system and Taraflex Evolution C3 Combi sports surface.
As the sports hall is also used for non-sporting activities such as examinations and assemblies, the school selected Taraflex Bateco, a mobile protective solution designed to safeguard the floor during these events, ensuring long-term durability while supporting a wide range of activities.
Says Gerflor: ‘Langley School selected the Taraflex Subflex system with Taraflex Evolution C3 Combi due to its superior shock-absorption performance, providing impact protection that the previously installed linoleum floor could not offer. The Taraflex surface also features Protecsol treatment, reducing friction build-up and simplifying maintenance.’
The upgraded sports hall is also used by local badminton, netball and volleyball leagues, benefiting both the school and the wider community.
Says Gerflor: ‘Langley School required a hardwearing replacement for its damaged sports hall floor. The brief called for a robust, long-term system capable of withstanding intensive daily use while also accommodating activities such as examinations and school assemblies.
‘FLR Group was appointed to install the Taraflex Subflex base system in conjunction with Taraflex Evolution C3 Combi. The aim was to create a versatile environment that supports pupils of all abilities in learning, developing and achieving their potential. The chosen system enhances user protection, reduces the risk of injury and provides a comfortable, high-performance surface that enables pupils to participate confidently in sporting activities.’
Mark Brown, facilities manager at Langley School, said: ‘Our sports hall floor had become damaged, so I contacted Wayne Andrews at Gerflor to discuss the available options. Based on his recommendations, we decided to upgrade to Taraflex because of its duty-of-care benefits and enhanced protection for our students. The durability of the Taraflex system is absolutely fantastic and perfectly suited to our requirements.
‘The floor is not only meeting our specification but exceeding our expectations. We are extremely pleased with the result. It looks fantastic and has created a safer environment for our students to excel in sport. We also hire the hall out to badminton, netball and volleyball leagues, whose members have commented on the excellent quality of the new surface.’
