Rinos marks 100 years with new leadership, stronger coir mats, and commitment to sustainability

THE entrance sets the tone for any space. Rinos entrance mats create a great first impression, offering the perfect match for any interior and flooring type, says the company.

‘For 100 years, we’ve been a trusted supplier, known for craftsmanship, reliability, and innovation. As we celebrate our centennial in 2025, we continue to focus on sustainable solutions that ensure a future-proof company for generations to come.

2025: the fifth generation steps up
‘This year marks a new chapter for Rinos. The fifth generation has officially taken the helm, with Herman and Age Mulder now serving as managing directors. Both have been deeply involved in Rinos for years, Herman as financial director and Age as operations director, after gaining valuable experience outside the company. Now, they’re leading Rinos forward, building
on a century of expertise.’

1925: it all started with coir
The history of Rinos is deeply rooted in coir mat production. In the early 20th century, Genemuiden—the heart of the Dutch carpet industry— saw a transition from handmade rush mats to machine-woven coir mats.

‘When Rinos was founded in 1925, coir mats quickly became a cornerstone of our expertise. Today, as the last remaining coir mat manufacturer in Europe, we still produce the classic version, now enhanced with Endura9: a branded feature that guarantees stronger, more durable coir mats.’

‘Endura9: strong fibres, longer-lasting coir mats’
Continues Rinos, ‘Endura9 builds on decades of expertise and close partnerships with suppliers in India, particularly in the western region of Tamil Nadu. Here, we source fibres from the largest and strongest coconuts—because the larger the coconut, the longer the fibres. The outer husk provides fibres up to 30cm in length, which we carefully select and process.

‘During the spinning process, we remove shorter fibres as much as possible, leaving only the longest and strongest ones. This results in high-quality yarn that is tightly anchored in the carpet backing, reducing fibre loss and ensuring a longer-lasting mat.

Coir mats made with Endura9 are the only coir mats strong enough for commercial use (class 31 and 32) and our Duratap meets the DDA requirements for accessibility. Available in three qualities, 12 colours, and pile heights ranging from 13-28mm, they provide a durable and natural entrance solution.’

‘Fast and flexible: coir cut length’
Flexibility is key in today’s market. That’s why Rinos now offers coir cut length, allowing customers to order exactly what they need—whether a single custom-cut piece or a full truckload. The company says this service helps reduce excess stock while ensuring fast delivery and the ability to respond quickly to demand. ‘Our production facility in the Netherlands guarantees short lead times and reliable supply.

‘But flexibility alone is not enough. Sustainability is equally important, which is why we continue to invest in environmentally responsible solutions. Today, Rinos coir mats contain 78% biobased and recycled raw materials.’

‘Proud to be Blue Angel certified’
Adds the company, ‘Sustainability has always been a core value at Rinos, and our efforts are now officially recognised. Our polyamide entrance mats with Pura Backing have received the Blue Angel certification, the original German ecolabel for environmentally friendly products.

‘For more than 45 years, Blue Angel has been an independent and trusted standard. Products carrying this certification have a lower environmental impact and meet strict health and quality requirements.

‘For Rinos, this certification confirms our commitment to creating high-performance entrance mats that are better for both people and the environment. Pura Backing is PVC- and plasticiser-free, has low VOC emissions, and causes no odour nuisance—making it a truly sustainable choice.’

Flanders Flooring Days: meet Rinos
Between 2-5 June, Rinos will be present at Flanders Flooring Days in Kortrijk, Belgium. This event is an opportunity to see ‘our latest innovations and meet Herman and Age Mulder as they lead Rinos into the future.

‘Joining them will be Milco Visscher, who starts as commercial director on 1 May. With more than 25 years’ sales and marketing experience in the carpet industry, he brings valuable commercial expertise to Rinos. Also present is Peter Kuipers, who has been managing director since 2020. He will oversee the ongoing transition until his departure on 31 July.

‘This leadership transition ensures a seamless continuation of Rinos’ legacy. With a strong team in place, Rinos remains committed to delivering high-quality entrance mats while embracing innovation and sustainability for the future.’

The company concludes, ‘Meet us at the Flooring Show in Harrogate. You can meet our international sales manager Bart Nietsch in Booth B7.
