Smoothing compounds with quick walk-on and drying times

To ensure the success of any floor finish, choosing the right smoothing compound is critical, and Tremco’s SX302 moisture-tolerant latex underlayment has been developed to ensure you have a well-prepared base for your floorcoverings, says the company.

‘Whether you’re looking at a newbuild or refurbishment project, Tremco’s range of smoothing compounds are designed to save flooring contractors valuable time and money, with competitive walk-on times and drying times.’

Tremco’s SX302 moisture-tolerant latex underlayment can be used prior to the application of a liquid applied dampproof membrane. Says the company: ‘It’s a moisture tolerant, cement based, latex underlayment developed for use in domestic, light commercial and light industrial environments. With a compressive strength of 25 N/sq mm, SX302 can be applied using a hand trowel to spread with a maximum application thickness of 6mm on minimized adhesive residues and 10mm on sound substrates.’

Tremco recommends thorough subfloor preparation before applying SX302. The surface should be free of contaminates such as oil, grease and laitance and other contaminants and should be vacuumed or swept clean.

‘For absorbent or porous surfaces, Tremco would recommend CS150 Acrylic primer or CS190 Gritty Primer, however, SX302 can be applied directly onto concrete or sand/cement screeds. The success of the system is dependent on the stability and bond of the underlayment to the substrate.’
The key benefits of SX302 are said to be:

  • May accept foot traffic after about 90 minutes
  • Moisture tolerant for use under surface DPMs
  • Protein-free – suitable for use in biologically sensitive areas
  • Extremely low odour with no unpleasant ammonia smell
  • Easy to mix and apply and a smooth surface is produced

Care must be taken when handling or storing the mixture and appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn, says the company.
