Tilemaster Super Flow 30 is a ultra-rapid setting smoothing compound

LIFTING old tiles or flooring to lay a new floor can be time-consuming and difficult depending on the adhesive used, and it isn’t always necessary. Where the previous floor consists of sound ceramic or vinyl tiles, it’s a relatively simple task to ensure they’re all firmly stuck down and not cracked or broken, prime them with Tilemaster Prime+ Grip and use a suitable smoothing compound to cover them and level and smooth the floor.

Tilemaster Adhesives recommends Tilemaster Super Flow 30, a double component, ultra-rapid setting smoothing compound that it says is ready for laying impervious flooring such as LVT and vinyl after 90 minutes. ‘This has excellent flow and adhesion properties, is moisture-tolerant and can be used to smooth the floor prior to the installation of a damp-proof membrane (DPM).

‘An excellent alternative, where speed is still important but less critical, is Tilemaster Pro Flow. This has many of the same properties as Tilemaster Super Flow 30 with a longer working time. It has a waiting time before laying of four hours for decorative floorcoverings.’

Both smoothing compounds can reportedly be used without priming on most substrates, although priming will minimise the risk of pinholes forming, allow for the best flow properties and prolong the working time of the product.

Where the existing floor has had to be lifted, there adhesive and flooring grade bitumen residues are often left behind, and many smoothing compounds cannot be used over these. Again Tilemaster Super Flow 30 and Pro Flow are the products to turn to, says the company, as they work well over these residues, providing a smooth surface on which to lay the floor.

‘Once the floor is smoothed, Tilemaster Eco-3000 should be used to install the floorcovering. This high temperature universal adhesive is suitable for installing LVT, PVC, vinyl, and rubber flooring as well as carpet and textiles onto various substrates. It’s ideal for use in conservatories, as well as other buildings with large expanses of glass where direct sunlight may heat the floor.

‘Tilemaster Eco-3000 has been formulated with a fast tacking-off time. Flooring can be installed after as little as 10 minutes, when the adhesive is semi-tacked off and has reached its ‘anti-slide’ state. Full tacking off takes 40 minutes and the floor is ready for light foot traffic after 12 hours.’
