World Environment Day: Balsan announces its new ‘Green Spirit’

SPEARHEADED by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually since 1974, World Environment Day has become the world’s largest environmental awareness platform. It’s celebrated by millions of people around the world. To mark the occasion, Balsan announced the publication of its new Green Spirit policy in June 2022.

Ambitious and realistic objectives for 2030
Balsan has been committed to a sustainable economy since the construction of its ‘green factory’ in 1973 and has set new environmental responsibility objectives to meet by the end of the decade. These are ambitious commitments that require the production line to accelerate its transition to a low-carbon industry, but they’re reportedly realistic enough to be met by 2030.

They will be clearly outlined in the new Green Spirit document. The objectives are related to four key, measurable criteria: recycling, the energy transition, carbon footprint, and waste management. Progress in each of these areas will be published annually in the Green Spirit update which will be made available to everyone online each year.

The six pillars for achieving the Green Spirit objectives
From eco-design to the recycling and reuse of end-of-life products, Balsan says it’s implemented a new way of approaching each operation within the company – a system in which best practices are coordinated and complement each other in a virtuous circle: circular economy. This environmental approach concerns all Balsan employees, all committed to having the Green Spirit. The following are the six pillars, which have complementary effects:

  1. Eco-design textile flooring by giving priority to recycled components and reducing the impact of packaging
  2. Sustainably produce the tile and carpet collections by limiting transport and applying virtuous cycles for electricity and water management
  3. Obtain certifications that officially recognise Balsan’s efforts with regard to manufacturing and building operations
  4. Reduce all waste from factories and offices and limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
  5. Expand recycling efforts internally in Balsan production units and externally by supporting recycling companies
  6. Encourage reusing used carpets by planning a second life for them from the outset.
These commitments aiming to find a harmonious balance between manufacturing and respect for the environment will be detailed in the Green Spirit brochure, which will be available online very soon.
