F Ball & Co’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive used to install safety vinyl sheet

SELECTED for its temperature tolerance and water resistance, F Ball & Co’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS vinyl adhesive has been used to install a safety vinyl sheet at the Pavilion Bar on Norfolk’s Cromer Pier, where the subfloor is made up of the pier’s 151m long wooden boardwalk that stretches out over the North Sea.

The Pavilion Bar is situated within the Pavilion Theatre at the end of Cromer Pier, where theatre-goers can enjoy refreshments before a show or during the interval.

Contractors from AW Flooring (Norfolk) were hired by North Norfolk District Council to refurbish the bar floor ahead of BBC TV programme ‘Antiques Roadshow’ shooting an episode from the pier, in anticipation of the thousands of visitors the TV show would attract to the area.

Prior to the installation of Altro Wood Safety vinyl sheet – selected for its sustained slip resistance – the 120sq m bar floor was previously covered with carpet tiles that had become worn over the years. Contractors took up these tiles and installed 6mm Hanson SP101 plywood sheets. These sheets were securely screwed down over the boardwalk subfloor, prior to installing the vinyl sheets.

Says F Ball & Co: ‘Unlike other water-based adhesives, Styccobond F49 is resistant to water, making it a suitable choice for an installation such as this situated directly above the sea, as well as other floors that are subject to damp and humid conditions.

‘Further, the innovative formulation of Styccobond F49 limits any movement and holds the floorcovering firmly in place. The adhesive also delivers the instant grab and extended open time associated with pressure sensitive adhesives, which, historically, hasn’t been available for temperature tolerant adhesives. This makes the installation process quicker and easier.’

The company continues: ‘Applied by contractors to the entire area, Styccobond F49 combines temperature tolerance with pressure sensitive qualities and as such, has good initial tack and high bond strength. This allows for vinyl sheet, tiles, or planks to be held firmly in place once positioned by the contractor and, when cured, the bond will securely hold vinyl floorcoverings from temperatures as low as -20deg C up to 60deg C. This prevents the expanding and contracting of vinyl floorcoverings under extreme temperatures, which can lead to tenting and gapping at the interface of adjacent tiles.’

Commenting on the project, AW Flooring (Norfolk) director, Andrew Webster, said: ‘We use F Ball & Co products most days because they’re solid, reliable, and great to use. Styccobond F44 and F46 are our go-to adhesives, but we used Styccobond F49 on the advice of our F Ball & Co technical representative for its water-resistant properties, which was perfect for this job. You can always trust in the yellow bucket.’
