Newhey Carpets is proud to design and manufacture carpets for Royal Birkdale Golf Club

NEWHEY Carpets says it’s proud to have designed and manufactured carpets for the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Merseyside, a deeply historic golf club formed back in 1889.

One of the top five clubs in the UK, Royal Birkdale has hosted more championships and international events since World War 2 than any other course in the world, including The Open a total of 10 times.

Built in 1935, the two-storey clubhouse was a very modern and typical example of the architecture of the period.

The building is a focal point for the club’s members and their comfort is tremendously important. Interior designer, Sacha Dunnett, of Sacha Interiors in Henley in Arden, understood and appreciated just that. She commissioned Newhey to create the carpets for numerous areas of the clubhouse including public areas, lounge, locker rooms, dining rooms and administration offices.

Sacha required 1,870sq m of wool-rich bespoke carpet, across three separate designs in a contract quality that could also withstand the footfall of a busy golf club.

To add impact to the entrance foyer of the clubhouse, Newhey Carpets manufactured a Colortec carpet with a textured design featuring the impressive Royal Birkdale Golf Club logo.

For the main public areas, Sacha explained her creative thought process: ‘The Royal Birkdale is a very imposing art deco style building with the most stunning view out from the back windows across the course to the sea beyond. I wanted to bring this view inside, almost as if the windows weren’t there and it seemed natural to want to bring the course inside on the carpet with the thought that as you drank your beer after a round you’d be standing on the course.

‘The design for the main bars and lounges came from an aerial view of the actual course, using the shapes of the holes, bunkers and scenery to bring the outside in. In addition to this, the design for the main entrance and corridors reflects the regal standing of the club using the club logo. The two designs have been linked with both colour and texture within the design and I’m most looking forward to seeing it all completed.’

Newards, based in Manchester and established in 1945, was awarded Best Commercial Flooring Project 2020 by Build Construction and Engineering for works at this prestigious golf club.

Says the company: ‘Our carpets are backed with evobac, a super sustainable secondary backing made using post-consumer PET. Just 1sq m of carpet prevents at least eight plastic bottles from going to landfill or entering our oceans. A unique eco-friendly hot melt, energy efficient laminating process creates an inseparable bond between the primary cloth and secondary backing, ensuring the finished carpet product has at least three times the bonding strength of conventional latex backed product.’

By specifying our carpets for this project, Sacha Dunnett and The Royal Birkdale Golf Club have reportedly diverted about 14,960 plastic bottles from going to landfill or entering our oceans.
