FLOORING IN EDUCATION
A MAJOR flooring refurbishment at Meadow Farm Primary School has been successfully completed, with specialist contractor Tricas Flooring delivering what’s described as a high-quality installation using a full UltraFloor system.
Spanning 400sq m, the project focused on revitalising worn corridors and the school library to create a safer, more durable, and inspiring environment for students and staff. The upgraded flooring reportedly enhances safety and longevity and introduces ‘a fresh, modern aesthetic’ to key learning spaces.
Tricas Flooring was given the challenge to replace outdated flooring with ‘robust, easy-to-maintain materials, while creating visually engaging corridors and a calm, welcoming library environment’.
To ensure a smooth and efficient installation, works were carried out while the school was closed. This provided uninterrupted access to all areas, allowing the team to complete the refurbishment safely, efficiently and on schedule with zero disruption to daily school activities.
The project presented a common but challenging issue: the removal of existing floorcoverings left behind stubborn adhesive residue. To overcome this, the Tricas Flooring team mechanically prepared the subfloor, grinding it back to clean concrete.
The surface was then primed using UltraFloor Prime IT Multi-surface Primer before being levelled with UltraFloor Level IT Two, ‘creating a smooth, stable base for the final floor finishes’.
Says the company: ‘Formulated to promote adhesion to all UltraFloor smoothing underlayments, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer reduces pinholing, minimising the risk of costly failures. With a coverage rate of 200sq m at a 3:1 dilution, Prime IT Multi-surface Primer is a must-have product for all flooring installation projects.
‘There are many reasons Level IT Two has become UltraFloor’s most popular floor-leveller. Its exceptional flow characteristics make it a very easy material to apply to various subfloors in commercial and domestic flooring projects. Its low odour formulation means this fantastic all-rounder leveller is equally suited to confined areas, proving particularly popular in the education, health and hospitality sectors.’
Continues the company: ‘With a set time of two-and-a-half hours, Level IT Two can receive bonded floorcoverings after just eight hours, making it suitable for projects with a tight deadline. What’s more, because Level IT Two is available as a two-component system, it takes the guesswork out of mixing, reducing site errors and guaranteeing a perfect application every time.
‘Corridors were finished with high-performance Forbo Marmoleum, chosen for its durability and sustainability for high-traffic educational environments. In the library, carpet tiles were installed to provide a softer, quieter and more comfortable learning space.’
Adds the company: ‘A range of UltraFloor adhesives supported the installation, including Stick IT 611 for the Marmoleum flooring and Stick IT 542 for the carpet tiles, ensuring secure, long-lasting results across all areas.
‘Engineered for strength and durability, Stick IT 611 excels in the installation of all types of linoleum. This high-performance, water-based, resin-free adhesive is built to withstand heavy footfall and the stresses caused by chair castors, making it ideal for schools, hospitals, transport hubs and other high-traffic public environments – including use on buses and trains.
‘UltraFloor Stick IT 542 provides a permanent tacky film when applied to stable and smooth subfloors – the ideal adhesive for fixing carpet tiles and looselay PVC floors or floorcoverings with PVC backings.’
Alex Page, director of Tricas Flooring, commented: ‘UltraFloor Level IT Two provided an exceptionally smooth and stable surface, ideal for the specialist Forbo Marmoleum. Stick IT 611 delivered reliable adhesion, ensuring a durable, long-lasting finish. Both products performed flawlessly, contributing to the high-quality transformation of the school’s corridors, while the 542 provided a great tackifier option for the carpet tiles applied within the library.’
Concludes UltraFloor: ‘The completed refurbishment has transformed Meadow Farm Primary School’s interiors, delivering a safe, vibrant and functional environment that will support students and staff for years to come.’
